IS SLEEP ESSENTIAL FOR OPTIMAL HEALTH?

Sleep is as vital as regular exercise and a balanced diet. During our sleep cycle our body is allowed to heal itself and it isn’t only about total hours of sleep. It’s also important to get good-quality sleep on a regular schedule so you feel rested when you wake up.

Here are three benefits to maintaining adequate sleep daily:

  1. Proper sleep allows the body's blood pressure to regulate itself.

It is recommended that adults get 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night. Getting less than six hours of sleep is known to be bad for overall health. The less you sleep, the higher your blood pressure may go. People who sleep six hours or less may have steeper increases in blood pressure. If you already have high blood pressure, not sleeping well may make your blood pressure worse.


2. We recognize and deal with emotions and expressions of other people better.

Adequate sleep can be linked to better emotional intelligence. Mood and sleep are closely connected. Poor sleep or inadequate sleep can cause added stress and irritability. And, healthy sleep can enhance well-being. Insomnia may increase the risk of developing a mood disorder, such as anxiety or depression.

3.Adequate sleep will reduce inflammation in several systems of the body.

Getting adequate sleep can affect inflammation. REM sleep is extremely important for many of your body’s functions, and this restorative sleep is also critical for encoding new memories into long term memories. It is also during REM sleep that endorphins for pain relief and growth hormone for healing are released, so you’ll have a lot of negative side effects from not sleeping, including inflammation, and your body will struggle to get well.

To sleep better, help your body develop a consistent sleeping pattern by going to bed and getting up at the same time each night. This will train your body to feel sleepy at the same time each night, and wake up at the same time every morning. Examine your room and make sure it's the perfect place for sleeping. Remove your TV and leave your phone outside as the lights from either can make your body think i't still daytime and it will be more difficult to get a good night's sleep.
