Slay Your Dragons One at a Time
How to Slay the Dragon

Slay Your Dragons One at a Time

A few weeks back, we met a leader of a large organization and he explained one of his pressing challenges - they have thousands of radios across many organizational districts and units.? He had very little visibility into how they were managed, what their condition was and truthfully, whether some even existed at all.? These radios cost around $4K each and the total value of all of them was in the millions.?? To add to the challenges, the person responsible for managing these radios was nearing retirement soon.

Upon meeting with his team, several other issues came to light:

  1. Instances of radios being lost or misplaced
  2. Radios that are no longer in operating condition
  3. A lack of knowledge about what particular radio was assigned to which vehicle, person or unit
  4. Not knowing how many radios were using old & obsolete technology
  5. Receiving requests for new radios without information about previously issued equipment

These challenges occur in all types of organizations regardless of their size.? It takes great leaders to acknowledge these obstacles within their organization and to begin the change of implementing systems that build accountability and transferable institutional knowledge.

Sometimes organizations get stuck with the perceived complexity of bringing about this change, or the resistance to change itself.? One of our philosophies is to slay one dragon at a time. Pick your highest priority asset that needs the most attention and build accountability around that.? Once that dragon is slain, it's time to move to the next asset. There are inexpensive and easy-to-use tools out there that can help you get organized one asset at a time.?
