Slava Ukraini!

Every month I send you a tight selection of future trends across the business, marketing, education, and more.?Today, a special issue on the war in Ukraine.

A world in turmoil needs fundamental change. The war in Ukraine has begun less than three weeks ago, yet has impacted the world irreversibly. The destruction and contempt for human life, the repeated bombardment of Ukrainian civilians, even those fleeing for safety; the deliberate targeting of apartment buildings, kindergartens, and hospitals, including one in Mariupol for mothers, children, and babies - is what we witness today. The picture of a wounded pregnant woman, who was taken on a stretcher from a maternity hospital that was bombed by Russia last week dying, along with her baby, will stay in our minds forever. The war in Ukraine has already claimed thousands of lives. Those who got a chance to escape take refuge in bunkers, basements, and subway stations. We are already experiencing the economic consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. With a bit less enthusiasm as usual, for obvious reasons, welcome to the special issue of the SCALEUP?Knowledge Beyond the Headlines?Newsletter, dedicated to Ukraine and its people! Slava Ukraini!

3 things we learned

  • The population composition of Poland has changed. Polish people know the pain of being invaded and are opening their homes to Ukrainian refugees. Today, it feels as if the entire country of Poland has joined the effort to welcome the needy. For many shared values such as being neighbors, Christians, Slavs, Polish open their houses where Ukrainians find new homes, The New York Times reports.
  • Russians fleeing their own country are being advised to wipe their phones. There is a new fear of facing detention for Russians, if their mobile phones while crossing the border contain any messages or apps where Putin is criticized for attacking Ukraine,?Forbes warns.
  • Pray. Give. Go. Saddleback Church is taking the lead in helping Ukraine. Being immersed in this overwhelming sea of refugees and first responders, we need to realize it is not just a Ukrainian or Polish, European, or global crisis. It is a human crisis. Get involved through Saddleback and bring hope and get communities back on their feet in the wake of tragedy. Your generosity counts!

The good

There is nothing good in every war. The war in Ukraine will leave our world worse than it was before. Political games will cost the lives of many innocent people again. At the same time, it is good to see that humanity remains, and people take care of others in need, even they don't know them, speak the language or share the same beliefs.

The bad

Disturbing photos and videos of the war affect our mental health. It’s impossible to equate the experience of living through war to that of watching it unfold on a screen. Recent research suggests that news coverage can have a strong impact on people who are not directly affected by a crisis. At work, at home, in nature, the screens of people seeking updates across the world are filled with pictures showing damage to buildings and bodies after the shelling in cities like Kyiv and Kharkiv, people and pets huddled in shelters, and Ukrainian citizens tearfully calling their loved ones to say goodbye, just in case - this all pictures affect our mental health, according to Time.

Do this

If the disturbing images from Ukraine break your heart, take immediate action. As Russian forces attack Ukraine, civilians suffer. When those affected flee their homes and seek shelter, many will rely upon humanitarian aid from charities on the ground. This is how you can Help Humanitarian Efforts in Ukraine, suggested by CNN. Your support will benefit 39 organizations, and among others, the donations go to the Salvation Army, Doctors Without Borders, Save The Children, Operation Blessing, or World Food Programme.

Let the Ukrainian anthem prevail!

Thank you for your response, Mariusz Soltanifar. I watched in horror at the destruction of the maternity hospital but marveled at how Kyiv has held up. But there are also stories of miracles and protection happening too.
