Slack Frontiers Europe 2022 is over. Here's what to do next.
“85% of all employees are more likely to stay put in their jobs if they feel they have the tech that supports them”
Yesterday saw 500+ Slack employees, partners, clients and enthusiasts come together for Slack Frontiers Europe 2022.
This was the first Slack event to take place in Europe since 2019.
And let’s be honest, quite a lot has happened since then - understatement of the year, or what?
The venue was filled with people wanting to understand how Slack is going to enable their organisation to grow with resilience as we navigate the economic future ahead of us.
Slack Frontiers started with a keynote from Slack Co-founder and CEO, Stewart Butterfield taking everyone through a thought experiment: instead of losing access to our offices in March 2020, what if we lost access to our technology?
In this alternative universe, we continue to commute, the office would be open, and we could still sit together in conference rooms, and have lunches with colleagues.
However, we couldn’t use technology to get our work done.
Butterfield painted a pretty bleak picture where companies would have disintegrated almost immediately.
We’d all just go out of business.
Obviously, that’s not what happened. The opposite happened.

We had the software but we weren’t able to go to offices, have in-person meetings, etc. In reality, amidst the chaos and fear, many companies and individuals flourished.
This video sums the Slack digital HQ story up nicely.
This was the narrative for Slack Frontiers as we continued through the day: your digital HQ - or digital workplace - is critical for making lives simpler, more productive and more efficient.
We agree. The digital HQ can help companies achieve this utopia. And a hub for employees to connect and communicate whenever or wherever they are working is truly transformational. But it doesn't always make things better.
Many are left asking how can I achieve this? What's actually happening in my digital HQ?
It feels like a new phase in the future of work conversation. Many companies have settled on their technology choices and found a hybrid working solution, but now they need to make sure it's actually working for them.
Historically, companies have not given enough attention to critical workplace systems, despite their importance to getting work done, to performance, onboarding, retention, sales and even well-being.
And today, with external pressures and needs for cost and time saving on the rise, it's time to start.
The physical HQ took centuries of collective thinking to reach where we are today. The digital HQ needs the same intention and consideration, in order to help you scale effectively and create an environment that allows employees to thrive.
