Struggling to build backlinks?
The classic skyscraper method doesn't cut it anymore.
Here's how to reverse engineer the competition and find unique, relevant, and valuable link placement opportunities ????
Instead of being like:
"Hey, I saw you link to X, can you link to me 'cause I'm better"?
Find untapped opportunities where it makes sense for them to link to you cause they are not linking out to anybody else (yet).
To do this, you need "Segments" and "Related Keywords"
??Segments:
These are the main umbrella topics, you can gather these by looking at the titles of the pages linking to the competition.
??Related keywords:
These are long-tail variations of the segments. You can find these by brainstorming, using @ahrefs of Google's suggestions.
Having a "why" behind your ask is vital for this strategy to work.
Ask yourself:
- Why would they link to my page?
- More in-depth?
- More up-to-date?
- Unique perspective?
By providing valuable content and a unique perspective, you can pitch link placements that make sense for everyone involved.
Let's take a look at an example:
Say you want to build links to a page about "cold email templates".
Here are the SERPs for it
We can get segment ideas by looking through their linking pages:
Literally, EVERY single linking page can be used as an idea for a segment in our campaign.
Look at the anchor text placement to get a feel for the WHY/context behind the backlink.
Can you find other pages where it is possible for you to replicate this?

And so on, you get the idea...
So, instead of reaching out to these same pages, find others that are similar in context, but that don't already link to someone else.
The best way to find these pages is to use Google:
intitle:{segment idea} + intext:{target topic}
Let's look at the context and whether they are linking to anybody else or not:
The context is slightly different (not sales), but it would still makes sense for them to link to a page like yours on cold email templates, wouldn't it?
A few other keys for this to work:
In most situations, be prepared to offer something in return.
This doesn't have to be money, it can be a free trial of your product (SaaS), free samples (eCommerce)...
You could also offer to update their article if they decide to add your link by adding extra content.
You get the link, and their content acquires more depth and freshness and ranks higher.
It's a win-win.
