Sky's the Limit: Embracing Visionary Approach for SME Growth

Sky's the Limit: Embracing Visionary Approach for SME Growth

Recently, some of you may have seen or heard about the consecration ceremony in India. While many viewed the events as a religious ceremony, I watched a leader of a (developing) country overcoming limiting beliefs and turning a few impossibles into possible ones.

India is no different than a Small/Medium-sized Enterprise. Prime Minister Modi (read CEO) of that country (SME) suggested launching a product (temple) that would touch billions of people across the world, followed to that he led the service and support structure development (airports and railway stations) along with a massive Sales & Marketing campaign. A day later I caught myself having a conversation with my small team where I stated, 'We would love to do that but our resources and revenue aren't enough (yet) to make that happen'... Many CEOs of SMEs would resonate with me on this as we continue to hit the glass ceiling but hardly a few break through that. So how does a PM of a developing nation can make the construction of a phenomenal airport possible in a record time of 20 months and state of an art train station and above all, a monumental (controversial) temple that would be visited by millions each year, that will pump an additional ~$300 million into the economy. How does he do that?

In an era where the pace of change is rapid and unrelenting, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) find themselves at a crossroads. The choice is clear: evolve or risk obsolescence.

Vision Beyond Circumstances Prime Minister Modi’s leadership is a testament to the power of vision transcending circumstances. Steering a developing nation, he never allowed the 'developing' tag to limit his aspirations for the country. Under his helm, India has witnessed significant advancements in infrastructure, including the development of new airports, roads, and digital networks. Modi's strategy embodies a 'blue sky approach', envisioning the highest potential without being clouded by the present limitations.

For SME leaders, this mindset is pivotal. The landscape is often riddled with challenges, from limited capital to market competition. However, the blue sky approach teaches us to look beyond these constraints and envision what’s possible. It's about setting audacious goals and aligning your strategy to meet them, not adjusting your aspirations to match current resources.

Innovation as a Catalyst Prime Minister Modi's initiatives, such as Digital India and Make in India, highlight innovation as a cornerstone of growth. These programs are not just about technological advancement but about rethinking traditional models and processes. SMEs can take a leaf out of this book. Innovation shouldn’t be seen as a buzzword but as a fundamental business practice. Whether it’s product development, customer service, or internal processes, thinking innovatively can open new avenues for growth and differentiation.

Collaboration Over Competition Another lesson from Modi’s tenure is the emphasis on collaboration. International partnerships, be it for technology, trade, or the environment, have been a focal point of his foreign policy. SMEs operate in a highly networked world where collaboration can be a game-changer. Building alliances with other businesses, academia, or even competitors can lead to synergies that are otherwise unattainable.

Investing in the Future Finally, Modi's focus on long-term investments, especially in infrastructure and youth, underscores the importance of building for the future. SMEs must also adopt this long-term perspective, investing in areas like employee training, technology, and sustainable practices. These investments might strain current resources but are essential for sustained growth and relevance.

In conclusion, the journey of Prime Minister Modi is rich with lessons for SME entrepreneurs. Adopting a blue-sky approach, fostering innovation, collaborating strategically, and investing in the future are not just strategies but imperatives in today’s dynamic business environment. As SME leaders, the path to transformative growth lies in transcending the conventional, embracing the potential, and most importantly, believing that the sky is not the limit, but just the beginning.
