Skydance submits new offer to by National Amusements, ITVX achieves its best month on record in June, Tubi to enter UK market, plus Critic's Picks...

1. In a deal that’s had more twists and turns than an average Formula 1 circuit, Skydance Media has reportedly submitted a new offer to buy National Amusements Inc., the company that controls 77 per cent of Paramount Global.

According to The Wall Street Journal , the two sides have reached a tentative agreement with terms being sent for review to the special committee set up to evaluate offers for Paramount Global.

The latest news comes just a few weeks after Shari Redstone, who owns National Amusements, ended talks with Skydance about a possible merger.

At the time, the company said it had not been able to “reach mutually acceptable terms regarding the potential transaction with Skydance Media for the acquisition of a controlling stake in NAI”.

2. ITV X has achieved its best month on record with 375.8 streams delivered across June.?

The broadcaster is attributing the uplift to its audiences for ITV’s Euro 2024 coverage, the new series of Love Island, and a strong slate of new dramas.

Sunday 30 June also saw ITV’s biggest ever day in streaming with the combination of England’s nail biting victory over Slovakia, Spain’s win against Georgia and Love Island contributing to a total of over 30 million streams across the day.

ITVX Managing Editor Craig Morris said: “We’re delighted that more people than ever before came to ITVX in June. They come in for a football match or Love Island but then stay to binge on the hundreds of films and TV shows now available.”

The 19 Euro 2024 matches on ITV in June were streamed just under 84 million times, with the current series of Love Island up to 76 million streams after 28 episodes, which is up 10 million on the comparable point in the series last year.

3. Snapchat and Warner Bros. Discovery have announced the launch of an extended, multi-region partnership to transform the fans consume and celebrate sporting content ahead of this year’s summer of sport.

The two-year partnership aims to entertain and inspire millions of Snapchat users across the UK, France and the rest of Europe with exclusive content that goes beyond broadcast coverage. Eurosport 's coverage of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 will come to life on Snapchat with a dedicated Olympics show featuring official highlights and behind-the-scenes content every day of the Games.

4. Alcohol company Pernod Ricard UK will become sponsor of E4’s prime entertainment.

The sponsorship will run across E4 and Channel 4 streaming on programming during 6-11pm starting in July, lasting for one year. It seeks to promote four of Pernod Ricard’s wines to different audiences.

MG OMD negotiated the deal with Channel 4 Sales .

Spencer Corrigan , planning business director at MG OMD, told The Media Leader: “Ultimately, there was a challenge that each of the Pernod Ricard wine brands have a different target audience and, within this, the brands resonate with a range of audiences with different passion points, from art/home design to foodies and entertainment.

“E4 and Channel 4 streaming’s range and diverse programming across the 12-month period perfectly allows us to reach all of these audiences through a clever phasing approach, to give all the brands their chance to shine at the right times.

“This partnership leans in to the brand challenge by leveraging the power of the E4 programming to give the wines portfolio strong visibility and alignment with content we know our audiences love.”

There will be different creatives to spotlight the four wines: Castillo de Ibiza Rosé, Brancott Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Campo Viejo Tempranillo and Greasy Fingers.

5. Tubi , Fox Corporation ’s ad-supported streaming platform, is to enter the UK market.

It will launch with more than 20,000 films and TV episodes on demand, with content from companies including Disney, Lionsgate , NBCUniversal and Sony Pictures Entertainment , as well as original programming.

The platform, which was launched in the US in 2014 and became part of Fox in 2020, utilises machine learning to deliver personalised viewing experiences to users.

Tubi will be available to UK viewers as a free app on all major connected TV platforms, Apple iOS and Android smartphones, as well as on desktop, in the coming weeks. A specific date has not been disclosed.

An ad campaign, “Watch What You Actually Want to Watch”, will launch on 15 July and aims to tackle “entertainment snobbery”.

David Salmon , executive vice-president and managing director of international at Tubi, said: ?“We believe that we can build a brilliantly broad, culturally ambitious offering that puts UK audiences back at the centre and makes it fun and easy to enjoy great entertainment from around the world.”

6. ITV landed the biggest television audience on any UK channel for 18 months with a peak of 18.4 million watching England's extra-time victory against Slovakia across ITV1 and ITVX on all devices.

From kick-off to final whistle the match was watched by 15.6m, with 66% of the available TV audience tuning into the coverage, including a massive 89% share for 16-34s . The total ITV coverage was watched by 11.3m. The audience was ITV's biggest since the 2022 World Cup.

With the England match followed directly by Spain v Georgia on ITV1 and ITVX, which peaked with 8.9m, ITV had its best Sunday for over a decade.
