The Skittle Principle

The Skittle Principle

We've all heard it everywhere: Set goals for success!?? And while it’s true, it's an incomplete truth. The complete truth can only be explained with what I call – The Skittle Principle! ??

I have based this principle on Skittle, the beloved candy. It has a vibrant, colourful outer shell with a sweet, soft core. Our goals should mirror this duality – they should be able to satisfy the vibrant, colourful external needs but at the same time meet the sweet, formless, muted, internal needs.

As much as I would like to bust out my lab coat and conduct a Quantum Physics experiment to illustrate this, I’m an IT industry professional, so let’s settle for a thought experiment instead. Picture a case, where you are gunning for your next flashy, high-paying job.

?Externally, it offers a good salary, social prestige, and professional growth.

?Now, assess does it also satisfy internal needs, like flexing your unique talents, mentoring and helping others, connecting with like-minded people, making an impact, and more? What do you find? How does that feel? ??

?? Choosing a goal that only satisfies external needs, neglecting the internal ones, is like eating a Skittle with just the hollow outer shell with no sweet core.
?? Conversely, focusing on a goal that solely meets internal needs without satisfying the external needs is akin to having the sweet, soft core which cannot sustain and survive the world without the protective outer shell.

So, next time you ponder over your goals, consider this ‘Skittle Principle’. Strive for a life where external achievements and internal fulfilment coexist, enriching your journey. Pursue goals that nourish both your ambitions and your soul, and watch how sweet true success can be. ????

Great analogy, plus it made me hungry for Skittles!

This is such a relatable analogy! Not only fits for an overall and meaningful career growth but also for periodic milestones that we draft for ourselves within an organisation

Love the analogy and the catchy principle. Balancing both aspects is definitely the recipe for meaningful success
