Skills Scratchpad: UX Research (Series Launch)
A LinkedIn connection reached out to me recently, curious to learn more about my work as a UX researcher at Coursera. She mentioned she wanted to switch to UX research from her current role as a customer success manager.?
What struck me was when she shared her concern that she had “no skills” for UX research. At the same time, when I asked her to share more about what she did in her current role, I noticed she mentioned a number of transferable skills that would position her as a strong UX research candidate.
I realised she held a perception that I’ve heard before from prospective career switchers. She thought she needed to start from scratch and build up her skill set before applying. It was a perception I held when I first switched from a software engineering background to instructional design and then to UX research.?
This article series is going to be my attempt at demystifying key skills of UX research, some which you may already have in your toolkit.?
I’ll start with one of my favourite UX Research skills – communicating findings for impact. Stay tuned for the first article release. In the meantime, let me know in the comments what UX research skills you'd like to learn more about!
By the end of this series, I hope you go from “(deep sigh) I don’t have the skills needed to be a UX researcher” to “Oh wait a second! I’m not starting from scratch!”

1 年Sedinam Worlanyo loved the article! It was a fun read, especially the Ghanian Jollof rice part (although we might have to bring in some Senegalese Thieboudienne..a debate for another day). I just private messaged! Let me know when you got some time to catch up. It's been too long!

1 年The concept of a skills matrix that allows mapping out skills requirement across roles, to make transferable skills visible/obvious, is a career hack that we can all learn or hone. Really thoughtful of you to do this for UX Research. I’m sure it’ll prove insightful for people transferring into or out of UX research.
