Skills for a Post COVID world

We were entering into a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) world even before the COVID 19. The upheavals caused by the COVID 19 have thrown up many questions for the experts to research and recommend for the Post COVID era.

Many experts have predicted that

• 50% of the jobs that exist today will disappear in the next few years and
• 21st-century skilled employees will be compelled to change their jobs across four or five verticals in their careers.

India with one of the youngest populations in the world was expected to derive the demographic dividend. With the kind of havoc created by the COVID in many of the countries, the opportunities are only going to increase many folds in the post-COVID era. But the majority of the youth seem to be having negligible knowledge of the many career paths that are available today for them.

Can anyone predict with certainty the domains that will do well in the 21st century? The world has always used the learnings from the past to predict the demand in the coming years. But with so much disruption all round will the past trends help us to predict, even if we succeed in getting that right, can anyone list the skill sets that will be required amidst the rapidly increasing disruption in every domain?

My humble opinion is that the demand from the 21st-century citizens will be for personalised services in every domain. 21-century employees should identify a career path that is aligned with their natural abilities and acquire skills to offer their services and enable it with a fair dose of technology. If people enjoy the work they do, they will continue to learn and adapt themselves to the changing needs of the industries they are in or they intend to get in. That will also help them to sustain their career and find a way to succeed in a world that continues to evolve rapidly
