A Skills Pathway for Emerging Leaders

A Skills Pathway for Emerging Leaders

Leadership, especially in today’s demanding environment, requires more than just ambition; it requires balance. Striking this equilibrium has been at the heart of my work and research, and I’m excited to introduce a framework designed specifically to help leaders thrive.

Introducing the Leaders Connect Framework

Over the past decade, I’ve worked with leaders at all levels and studied how transformational leadership behaviours impact performance and well-being. What emerged is a powerful model that highlights the four potential leadership states:

  1. Burnout Risk (Low Leadership Skills, Low Well-being Skills)
  2. Balanced but Static (High Well-being Skills, Low Leadership Skills)
  3. Driven but Drained (High Leadership Skills, Low Well-being Skills)
  4. Sustainable High Performance (High Leadership Skills, High Well-being Skills)

The goal? To help you move into that top-right quadrant — Sustainable High Performance — where your leadership impact grows without sacrificing your health or energy.

Why This Framework Matters for Emerging Leaders

As an emerging leader, you’re navigating a crucial phase in your career. This is when you’re building the habits, skills, and mindset that will shape your long-term success. The Leaders Connect Framework focuses on two critical axes of leadership development:

  • Performance & Well-being Skills (X-Axis): These personal practices sustain your energy, resilience, and focus. They help you manage your workload without burning out, bounce back from setbacks with confidence, and maintain composure under pressure. Imagine structuring your day to match your energy peaks or having strategies in place to recover after stressful situations — these are the skills that ensure you’re performing at your best consistently.
  • Leadership Skills (Y-Axis): These are the behaviours that empower your team and amplify your leadership potential. As an emerging leader, developing these skills is essential to driving results while inspiring trust and collaboration. Whether it’s setting a clear vision, creating psychological safety within your team, or using storytelling to align and engage others, these skills are what set exceptional leaders apart.

By strengthening both axes, you’ll not only achieve greater clarity and confidence in your leadership but also establish yourself as someone who leads with purpose and sustainability.

The Journey to Sustainable High Performance

Where do you currently stand as a leader? The Leaders Connect Framework maps leaders into one of four quadrants:

  1. Burnout Risk: Feeling overwhelmed, unsupported, or unable to balance work and personal demands? The focus here is on building foundational well-being and leadership skills to get you back on track.
  2. Balanced but Static: If you’re prioritising self-care but feel you’re not influencing or inspiring others as effectively as you could, it’s time to strengthen your leadership behaviours and drive greater impact.
  3. Driven but Drained: For those who are achieving results but feel depleted or stressed, this quadrant highlights the importance of sustainable performance habits to avoid burnout.
  4. Sustainable High Performance: This is where leaders thrive — balancing strong leadership capabilities with personal resilience and well-being. It’s not just about maintaining this state but continuing to grow.

Wherever you land, the framework provides a clear skills pathway to help you move forward.

Research-Backed Insights to Support Your Growth

The skills embedded in the Leaders Connect Framework are grounded in extensive research. Studies on energy management show how aligning tasks with peak productivity periods significantly boosts focus and results. Stress recovery and resilience, as championed by researchers like Christina Maslach, ensure that you’re not just surviving challenges but thriving through them.

On the leadership side, having a clear vision and aligning it with strategic goals has been linked to improved team performance. Decision-making frameworks, like those introduced by Daniel Kahneman, demonstrate how strategic thinking builds confidence even in uncertainty. Storytelling, as a leadership tool, is proven to inspire teams and foster alignment around shared goals.

Psychological safety, a concept backed by Amy Edmondson’s research, is critical for fostering collaboration and trust. When team members feel safe to share ideas, innovation flourishes. Meanwhile, adaptability and emotional agility, as explored by Carol Dweck and Daniel Goleman, equip leaders to navigate change, resolve conflicts, and lead with empathy. Together, these skills create a leadership approach that is both effective and sustainable.

The Leaders Connect Framework is also the culmination of years of my own research, coaching, and leadership development. For my MSc in Organisational Psychology, I interviewed CEOs to explore the relationship between transformational leadership and well-being. Their insights validated a key principle: to lead effectively, you must also lead sustainably.

Over the years, I’ve coached leaders in organisations ranging from startups to global enterprises. I’ve seen firsthand the challenges emerging leaders face as they transition into more demanding roles. The strategies and tools integrated into this framework are designed to help you overcome those challenges and thrive as a leader.

What’s Next?

I’ve developed a diagnostic tool that will allow emerging leaders to map their current position within the framework. This tool will offer personalised insights into your strengths, areas for growth, and actionable steps to move toward Sustainable High Performance. Stay tuned for updates on how you can access this resource in the coming weeks!

In the meantime, I’m inviting you to join our upcoming webinar, where we’ll explore the framework in depth. We’ll unpack the critical skills you need to succeed, backed by research and practical strategies. This is an opportunity to take control of your leadership journey and set yourself up for long-term success. Details will be shared next week.

Final Thought

Leadership isn’t just about achieving results; it’s about doing so in a way that sustains you and inspires those around you. As an emerging leader, you’re at a pivotal point where the right tools, mindset, and support can make all the difference. The Leaders Connect Framework is here to help you find that balance and thrive in both your personal and professional life.
