Skills Not Most Important For Success

Skills Not Most Important For Success

Some leaders believe that "one of today’s biggest HR trends is the shift to a skills-based approach ... ?and that it encourages learning and creativity in the workplace." (From a newsletter I just received)

My Commentary

In everything I'm seeing to do with hiring new employees, all the focus seems to be on skills, diplomas and certificates - but those are things that anyone can have if they took the time to acquire them.

Companies that really want to thrive in the new era and beyond need to shift all the focus to investing in human skills - an area that has really been neglected all along.

There is also so much focus on keeping our skills up to date for succeeding in today's dynamic business environment. But our professional skills are no longer the main key to success. Companies that really want to thrive in the new era and beyond need to shift all the focus to investing in human skills - an area that has really been neglected all along.

The two most important things for the success of any group of employees -

1) Connection - everyone understands that their good future depends on their good connection. There needs to be a general agreement that the entire team meets for at least half an hour every day to invest in their connection. The vibe that is generated from these sessions impacts everything else they do throughout the day. A theme is chosen to discuss, with the purpose being to bring people closer together. The team talks about a topic in general without going into personal details.

2) Loyalty - everyone understands that the good future of the company depends on the genuine commitment of every single person to the company, and the processes they're going through together. Everyone needs to feel that they all belong to the same group, and how much they are dependent on one another for success. This is why encouraging competition among team members will actually have a negative affect on the people and the bottom line.

How does feedback fit into this framework? If we educate our people properly they'll understand that constructive criticism is for their own benefit, because the success of the company is tied directly to their personal success.
