The Skills Companies Want Their Future Employees to Have
If the job market feels competitive, it’s because it is. Our data shows there is one job per two applicants and adding to this, the majority of working Americans are considering moving on from their current job this year . But here’s the challenge, a whopping 41% say they don't know how to match their skills to jobs, and nearly a quarter say that knowing which jobs fit their skill set is the hardest part of the job search. You need to start with knowing the skills employers are looking for.
When it comes down to it, skills are the currency of today’s workplace, and understanding your strength in specific skills is crucial to landing your next opportunity. Don’t be intimidated — this is a good thing! Looking for a job today is about the tangible skills you bring to the table and less about things like where you went to school.
The key here is knowing how to match the skills you have to the ones that are in demand right now. But don’t worry, we’re here to help!
LinkedIn released the annual Most In-Demand Skills list today to help job seekers know which skills they should show off to stand out in today’s crowded environment.
This year’s #1 most in-demand skill is perhaps, unsurprisingly, communication. It’s always been a necessary strength to have in the workplace, but the increase in hybrid work has really emphasized the importance of communication.?
Communication is more than what you’re saying at work — it’s how you’re saying it. Whether it’s giving feedback, partnering with a colleague to get a project done, or sharing updates with your leadership team, the art of communication drives how information is received.?

This year’s list also features a number of analytical and problem solving skills. And this doesn’t just mean sorting through data in an Excel grid. This means applying critical thinking when you run into an obstacle at work, whether that’s thinking through a new system, streamlining inventory at a restaurant, or providing a recommendation for when to launch a seasonal promotion.
This year we’ve also introduced a “skill of the moment” – adaptability. I often say that the only constant at work is change and we really have seen a lot of it over the last few years. Knowing how to pivot, being comfortable with change, and adjusting to new situations with solutions is crucial in today’s world of work as seen with the fast rise of AI. As AI quickly redefines the way we work, focusing on human centric skills is more important than ever.?
This list was released just this morning, but LinkedIn members have already been on their upskilling game. Over the last 12 months, members have added 680 million skills to their profiles and we know that learning new skills is one of the top career goals for professionals this year.
To continue this skills momentum, LinkedIn is offering a dozen LinkedIn Learning courses to learn these top skills for free through May 31, 2024:?
I know it can seem a little daunting to pick up certain skills, but the good news is that every skill on this list is something you can learn, improve on and invest in. Like in anything else in life, practice makes perfect and the skills you learn at work are muscles that you’ll build over time.?

9 个月Skills are of course important but if skill fit to a job is the predictor, why do people in the same job, in the same employer, with the same skills, perform differently? There is something else at play that's key to predicting fit and performance, and that's behaviors. Behavior drives skills application.
Very useful information!
