Skills-Based Hiring: Increasing Access to Opportunity in APAC

Skills-Based Hiring: Increasing Access to Opportunity in APAC

The March 2025 LinkedIn report on skills-based hiring highlights a growing shift towards prioritising skills over traditional qualifications in the hiring process.

As companies across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region face talent shortages and evolving workforce demands, many are adopting a skills-first approach to recruitment. This strategy not only expands talent pools but also improves diversity and internal mobility, ensuring that organisations remain competitive in an increasingly skills-driven job market.

The top-line takeaway? Adopting a skills-first approach can significantly broaden and expand the talent pool.

  • Considering candidates with relevant skills, even if they haven't held the exact job title, can increase the potential talent pool by up to 6x globally.
  • And in APAC, this number goes even higher for India (11.4x), Indonesia (9.5x), Australia (7.7x) and the Philippines (6.9x).
  • While it is slightly smaller for Singapore, Malaysia and New Zealand, it still increases the talent pipeline by a whooping 3 to 4 times.

Clearly skills based hiring can help to expand the talent pool and also open up doors for candidates who have adjacent skills. The question is how can organisation move towards skills based approach at scale, not only to match but also validate the skills and more importantly how do we get the recruiters (to start with) and hiring managers bought onto this. Some strategies i cover in #theskillsadvantage
