Founded in 2019, Skilled Mapping is an inspiring example of a true trailblazer in PropTech with its extensive geospatial and thermal data solutions that support climate resilience. Co-founded by Alex Wrigglesworth , and now technologically driven by CTO Isabelle Wrigglesworth , this family-run company combines LiDAR, high-res 360° imaging, and a proprietary thermal mapping system to map urban spaces on a massive scale. Skilled Mapping has charted over 100,000 unique kilometers across six countries and collected a vast dataset of thermal images of 500,000 homes across the UK, France, and Germany.
Cutting-Edge Technologies Transforming Urban Landscapes
Through a unique mobile mapping system powered by Nvidia-embedded technology, Skilled Mapping offers municipalities and businesses valuable insights into heat loss, air quality, and sustainability. Their four-step process provides street-level thermal data, AI analysis, and interactive web-based reporting for clients. In this process, thermal images are analyzed using AI to detect inefficient insulation, high-risk zones for fuel poverty, and targeted retrofit recommendations, supporting a strategic approach to decarbonization. This technology helps cities combat fuel poverty by identifying homes with energy inefficiencies, reducing CO? emissions, and improving community well-being.
Past Projects: Thermal Mapping for Climate Impact
Thermal Capture of South Birmingham and Wolverhampton
In the groundbreaking Thermal U.K. project, Skilled Mapping captured over 20 million high-resolution thermal images, covering more than 400,000 homes in South Birmingham and Wolverhampton. This vast dataset, one of the largest of its kind, serves as a foundational resource for an AI model aimed at identifying heat loss and generating CO? reduction recommendations. With unmatched scale and detail, this project represents a major step toward smarter, data-driven approaches to urban decarbonization.
Comprehensive Capture of Plymouth
To further refine their thermal mapping technology, Skilled Mapping undertook a city-wide capture of Plymouth during winter 2023-2024. Using mobile mapping systems at high speeds and across varied weather, the project demonstrated the in-house system’s precision and adaptability. This comprehensive Plymouth dataset serves as a valuable resource for cities looking to understand and mitigate urban heat loss efficiently.
