SkillBridge: The Path to Success for Service Members and Employers

SkillBridge: The Path to Success for Service Members and Employers

The DoD SkillBridge program is a win-win for Service Members and employers.

It provides Service Members with valuable civilian work experience, while employers can tap into a talent pool of highly skilled military personnel.

The DoD SkillBridge program, also known as the Army Career Skills Program (CSP), allows Service Members to participate in internships, apprenticeships, or training programs with industry partners during their last 180 days of active duty – with an average internship length of 90-120 days.

Service Members get the chance to learn new skills, network with potential employers, and gain a competitive edge in the civilian job market. They continue to receive their full military pay and benefits while participating in the program, and companies are not allowed to compensate them.

Where can Service Members find SkillBridge/CSP opportunities?

Service Members can find SkillBridge/CSP opportunities by visiting their local transition center, exploring the official DoD SkillBridge website for a list of approved providers, and joining HireMilitary's SkillBridge talent pool.

By joining the talent pool, Service Members make themselves available for internship opportunities with HireMilitary’s employer partners. They also get access to dedicated SkillBridge recruiters who can help supplement their job search by providing guidance and support throughout the job search process – at NO COST.

How does the DoD SkillBridge program benefit Service Members?

  • They gain real industry experience through training, internships, apprenticeships, or other opportunities.
  • They build a professional network and showcase their skills and high performance in a practical setting.
  • They increase their chances of getting a job offer after they leave the military.

SkillBridge tips for Transitioning Service Members:

  • Start the search early, preferably about a year out from separation.
  • Initiate conversations with commanders and obtain their support.
  • Apply to as many SkillBridge/CSP opportunities as possible.
  • Utilize services like HireMilitary and other SkillBridge/CSP providers.
  • Treat the SkillBridge program like a job search.

How does the DoD SkillBridge program benefit employers?

The DoD SkillBridge program is a unique opportunity for employers to find top talent among those exiting the military.

Through the program, employers gain access to a pool of highly skilled and motivated individuals with specialized expertise and a strong work ethic. They also get to evaluate potential employees for culture fit and skill suitability. This allows employers to assess the capabilities of these individuals and determine their potential as valuable assets to the organization – even before making a hiring decision.

By participating in the program, companies demonstrate their commitment to DEI initiatives and benefit from the skills, experience, and contributions that military members bring to the workforce, ultimately creating a more inclusive and diverse work environment.?

How can companies participate in the DoD SkillBridge program?

  • Acquire a Department of Defense Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
  • Find suitable candidates within their last 180 days of service.
  • Understand that the average SkillBridge internship is around 90-120 days long.
  • Align roles and process paperwork through the respective service branches.
  • OR let HireMilitary do the work for you!

As an approved DoD SkillBridge provider, HireMilitary can source candidates for your SkillBridge program, handle the paperwork, and ensure a smooth process for all parties involved.

The Path to Success

The DoD SkillBridge program provides Transitioning Service Members with life-changing opportunities and companies with a pipeline of motivated talent.

By reducing the transition stress and providing valuable hands-on experience, the DoD SkillBridge program serves as an exceptional pathway for Service Members to embark on their post-military careers.

It’s a great program - however DoD managing it sucks. It’s currently shut down for 60-90 days or more. I’ve had employers signed up a year ago and still not listed.

Wow, this is absolutely incredible, we all know that Skillbridge can be a little overwhelming and at times confusing, this is such a clear guide to the things you need to know when navigating the program and looking for your ideal Skillbridge opportunity, after all, you only get one chance at Skillbridge, so make it count! Great write up and worth sharing Dave Kennett and Clarence Blalock!

The SkillBridge program completely changed the trajectory of my post military career. I was able to gain true industry experience with an incredible company BEFORE I got out. I kept my Commander informed, attended USO events, held informational interviews and found a few mentors in industries that I was interested in. Great article Olivia Perez-Breland, M.A.!
