Unpopular opinion - #dodskillbridge is a benefit not an entitlement.
As nouns the difference between?benefit?and?entitlement?is that?benefit?is an advantage, help or aid from something while?entitlement?is the right to have something.
I continue to see on here and other social media platforms services members complain of lack of support from their leadership in participating in a skillbridge internship. Most often it is younger service members, with no real understanding of manpower requirements, mission readiness or the fact that maybe you were not a great employee and your unit is going to enforce your employment contract and finish your time to earn those precious entitlements and not give you benefits.
Skillbridge is a fantastic opportunity, it allows companies to reduce risk while evaluating your worth, and it allows the member the opportunity to showcase their skills that may not have translated from military to civilian. Skillbridge does not have to be 180 days, negotiate the length. I would argue service members using an internship are different than college students with no work experience and don't require 6 months. Be realistic with your request and when you don't get your way it doesn't mean you leadership is toxic, it might just mean they can't support the request.

3 年There can be middle ground. 90 days instead of 180, or mixing terminal leave with skill bridge time. I do not believe a service members past performance should come into play. Flags, bars or disciplinary action barring any positive actions are different. But, in a few months that service member won’t be your problem so let them start over fresh and choose whether or not to make the most of it. I do understand the barracks lawyer problem; there is a lot of us versus then instead of help me help you.

3 年I respect your opinion on this Glenn! I think a lot of Sailors might not consider shrinking it down a bit and might just be stuck in an "all or nothing" mind frame. I was very lucky to have been approved because I was already going to be gapping the billet and with skillbridge I gapped it a bit more. The command was luckily able to get an emergent relief in this September last I heard but I've been gone since basically late March.
