SKILL - WILL Matrix

SKILL - WILL Matrix

A skill-will matrix is a tool that is used to assess the competency and motivation of individuals or a team to complete a particular task. It is often used in performance management and human resources management to identify areas for development and support.

The matrix is typically divided into four quadrants, with skill on the x-axis and will on the y-axis. The four quadrants are:

  1. High Skill, High Will: These individuals or teams are highly competent and motivated. They are the top performers who are likely to take on complex tasks and excel in their work.
  2. High Skill, Low Will: These individuals or teams have the required skills but lack motivation or interest. They may be demotivated due to a lack of challenges, recognition, or engagement. Managers need to identify ways to re-engage and motivate them to maximize their potential.
  3. Low Skill, High Will: These individuals or teams are enthusiastic and motivated, but lack the necessary skills to perform the task. Training and development programs can help them acquire the required skills and improve their performance.
  4. Low Skill, Low Will: These individuals or teams are neither skilled nor motivated. They need significant support and guidance to improve their performance or may need to be reassigned to a more suitable role.

Using a skill-will matrix can help managers understand the strengths and weaknesses of their team and identify areas for improvement. It can also guide the development of training and development programs, goal setting, and performance management.
