The magistrate looked down at me, peering sternly over her half-moon glasses…
There was absolute silence in the room.
My heart was thumping hard in my chest.
And then she winked.
“The 'look' is a technique they taught us at magistrate school. It creates a specific emotional response” she told me.
“But Mum, you were scary!” I said, and we both laughed out loud.
At the age of twelve, I’d just had my first presentation skills lesson in our kitchen at home – from my Mum who was a local magistrate.
“You meet many different types of people in court, so you need to know how to listen, understand and communicate with all of them. It takes practice, but it makes a difference”
And from that day I was hooked. Hooked on speaking and presenting.
I looked for every possible opportunity at school to get on my feet and speak. And it stuck with me for the next forty-five years.
When I went into Financial Services, I spoke to groups of IFAs every week, and at every industry conference.
