A?skill?is a type of work or activity which requires?special?training and?knowledge.
Skills development is the process of identifying your skill gaps, and ?developing and honing these skills.
It is important because your skills determine your ability to execute your plans with success.
Imagine a carpenter?trying to build a house. He has the raw materials?but lacks good?wood working tools.
He has, however, a flimsy hammer and a small screwdriver. Without the right tools like a hand saw, he?can’t turn?these raw materials?into house building pieces.
Skills development is generally used to refer to?the pro- ductile capabilities acquired through all levels of learning and training, occurring in formal, non-formal, informal and on-the-job settings.
It’s the same with goal achievement. In goal achievement, your skills are your tools. The house is your goal. Just as you need the right tools to build a house, you need the right skills to build your goal.
Without the right skills, you will only frustrate yourself, waste your time, and spend a lot of time dealing with rudimentary issues caused by the lack of knowledge or lack of skills, as opposed to progressing in?your?goal.
?While difficulty and struggle is part?and parcel?of any goal pursuit, without the right skills, you find yourself struggling more than necessary. Worse still, this?struggle is unconstructive and doesn’t?help you move forward.
Skills Development is Neglected
Yet, why is skills development often neglected?
There are two main reasons.
Firstly, people are often?impressed by what others have accomplished?without realizing what they went through to get there. We see their?accolades and victories, and make gross assumptions about what it takes to succeed. Then we become disappointed when we attempt the goal, only to find out?that it’s not as easy as it seems.
This is?very?common in?blogging. People see?big name internet “gurus” making 6–7 figure income from blogging.
Thinking that it’s easy, and perhaps perpetuated by the claims of said?gurus who happen to sell you courses claiming to help you?do the same, these folks?start blogging as well, expecting?to achieve the same results?in a short period of?time
They become?rudely awakened when they don’t even get a trickle of traffic?after a few?months,?much less earn?an income. Some press on; many give up

Skills development is globally considered as key for productive employment.
Hence it is an important means for increased productivity, private-sector development, inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction.
Economic diversification and structural change towards high productivity sectors is necessary for combating poverty in a sustainable way.
This requires a better skilled and more adaptable labor force which can spur domestic and foreign investment. Linking skills development to broader education and employment, growth and development strategies and systems is essential to ensure relevance, policy coherence, coordination and alignment.
Studies show that effective, sustainable approaches to workforce development and employment must improve a combination of skills for employability of individuals, and at the same time build a sustainable system for improved private-sector competitiveness.
Especially, youth unemployment resulting from mismatch between the supply of the education system and labor market needs could in part be addressed through adequate skills development within a future-oriented, flexible and holistic education system for lifelong learning. Given increasing demands and based on the global goals (particularly SDGs 1, 4 and 8) as well as the Policy Framework for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Assistance, will support skills development for employment in an education system that provides opportunities for lifelong learning.
WHAT IS SKILLS DEVELOPMENT?
Skills development is generally used to refer to the productive capabilities acquired through all levels of learning and training, occurring in formal, non-formal, informal and on-the-job settings.
It enables individuals to become fully and productively engaged in livelihoods, and to have the opportunity to adapt these capabilities to meet the changing demands and opportunities of economy and labor market.
The acquisition of such capabilities depends on many factors, including a quality lifelong learning system and a supportive learning environment.
The types of skills required for employment can be divided into: ? Basic and foundation skills, which are acquired through the primary and secondary formal school system, or through non-formal and/or informal learning processes (e.g. active learning, oral expression, reading comprehension, written expression, ICT literacy, active listening).
These are pre-requisites for acquiring further skills enhancing the prospect of sustainable employment. ? Transferable skills, which include the abilities to learn and adapt, solve problems, communicate ideas effectively, think critically and creatively and the ability to manage self and others.
These skills enable people to adapt to different work environments as well as improving their opportunities to career-building. ? Technical and vocational skills, which are specialized skills, knowledge or know-how to perform specific duties or tasks, mainly in a professional environment.
These include, but are not limited to, the traditional forms of technical and vocational education and training (TVET), skills acquired through the secondary level of the formal school system or through non-formal and/or informal learning processes.
Professional and personal skills, including individual attributes relevant to work such as honesty, integrity, reliability, work ethic, and judgement.
Low skills perpetuate poverty and inequality. When done right, skills development can reduce un- and underemployment, increase productivity, and improve standards of living. Helping people develop and update their skills makes economic sense.
