In the mid-90s ‘The Chicago Tribune’ newspaper went online. The designers of the online version did an excellent job of transforming the physical one that knocks on millions of doors every day.
It had the same look and feel, the advertisements were neatly lined around the corners, and instead of a static image, they would now lead to advertiser’s page when clicked. It was received with much fanfare.
Yet, the online version failed miserably. Maybe they were too early to get on the online news offering. A hundred other reasons can be attributed to their failure. Yet there is an important lesson on ‘Design’ from this episode.
