Sketch of the City of Melbourne 1838
William Roadknight (1792-1862) was born in Warwickshire, England and migrated to Tasmania in 1820 with his brother Thomas. In 1836 William landed in the Port Phillip District with sheep from Tasmania and took up land close to Geelong in the Barrabool Hills "near the Ceres Bridge".
This 1838 sketch by William is an early depiction of the City of Melbourne, with allotments carefully outlined and numbered in the drawing. On the verso is a list of names of people who purchased allotments matching the numbers in the sketch. The one 'No. 6,' off Flinders Street, appears to have been purchased by Roadknight..
This sketch was purchased by the State Library of New South Wales from Gladys Roadknight in 1933. A1953

9 个月Hello Geoff Does SLNSW have any more early maps of Melbourne environs for the early period of 1836 to 1854? I am keen to learn more of these resources as I will be coming to Sydney to do some research about this in July... Andrew
