Skanda Shashti

Skanda Shashti

Skanda Shashti, or Kanda Shashti, is a significant festival dedicated to Lord Murugan, observed by Tamil Hindus. Celebrated for six days in the Tamil month of Aippasi (around October-November), it commemorates the victory of Murugan over the demon Surapadman, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The festival culminates in Soorasamharam, the final day when Lord Murugan defeats Surapadman, marking a dramatic moment reenacted in various temples through grand processions and performances.

Devotees observe a fast for six days as part of the rituals, which is believed to bring spiritual purification, peace, and prosperity. Many also recite the "Skanda Shashti Kavacham," a prayer that seeks protection and blessings from Murugan. This period of prayer and fasting is particularly beneficial for overcoming obstacles and achieving success, and it is seen as a time for reflection and renewal of one’s devotion to the deity
