Sixty minutes on Trust

Sixty minutes on Trust

5 takeaways from our open discussion

  1. Who we trust, and why. Some participants expressed they need a relationship before being able to trust. Others rely on instinct and one participant shared that trust can be partially attributed to our biological wiring.
  2. Action speaks louder than words.? Organizational culture observations: An organization that relies on emails after meetings to ensure follow up on action points, yet no one ever delivers. Versus an organization where there is no need for emails to ensure follow up, because people do what they commit to. Personal integrity and accountability are key components of trust.
  3. When trust is broken. Can we lean in and have the hard conversations in order to mend the relationship? Is there the psychological safety to do so? Do we care enough and have the courage to step in to rebuild the relationship one piece at a time? The BRAVING inventory is one tool with which one can sit down to have the hard conversation by exploring specific elements in a trust relationship.?
  4. Delegation. What is the relationship and the consequence of lack of delegation? When delegation is lacking, people agreed they feel a loss of autonomy which has a negative impact on their motivation. Micromanagement is the extreme example of the inability to delegate. The root cause of this inability is often linked to a need for control, fear of failure or a shortage of self-trust.??
  5. The Trust equation. Another method to frame trustworthiness was developed by Charles Green. It looks at 4 variables; competency, reliability, intimacy*. Do we feel someone is competent? Reliable? Do we feel safe enough to discuss difficult agendas? Often we have a preference for one of the three and it's important to keep all three in perspective.

* In writing this we need to mention that the one variable we missed in the equation is self interest and how it reduces a person's trustworthiness.
