Maybe it's the need for a Friday brain dump or the fact that I'm coming up on SIX years in the Recruiting profession, but I've been thinking more & more lately about the reasons I fell in love with Recruiting. These reasons drew me in during my Senior year of college at Buffalo State University, led me down the thruway from Buffalo to Rochester NY, and have kept me engaged for the beginning stretch of my professional career so far.?
- The people. Recruiting, whether it's from an agency perspective or internal for one organization, allows me to interact & build relationships with people with all different backgrounds, goals, skillsets and passions. I think adding in the phrase to my conversations with candidates, "Let's take a deeper dive…" has allowed me to truly dig deep into what motivates them, what's pushing them away from their current employers and to what would get them excited enough to accept an offer elsewhere. I love connecting the dots between people and their next step, whether it's for the next 2-3 years of their career or within an organization they can call home indefinitely and put down roots.?
- The learning. Every day in Recruiting is different. If you're organized, the processes remain the same, but everything in between changes by the day. I've been given opportunities throughout my career to learn about DEI, software, engineering and manufacturing, labor laws, industry hiring practices, etc. I actually went to college for Mass Communication and Media Production, two majors that taught me how to effectively communicate through different mediums and how to process information coming back at me. Those fields of study built a solid foundation for continuous learning throughout my career, but the world of Recruiting opened me up to skillsets I never even thought about before.?
- The market knowledge. In this field, Recruiters gain exposure to market knowledge regarding companies across all different industries, job titles, layoffs/hiring freezes, salaries, promising college programs, etc. All of this intel, if used properly, can help us become well-equipped Subject Matter Experts. The information we gather also gives us a deeper sense of connection to the communities we're recruiting in, whether they're local to us or states away.?
Recruiting is the field I chose to pursue six years ago, as a college graduate from Buffalo, New York. It has brought me lifelong friends, a stable career path, and an overall sense of purpose. This industry can certainly have its up's and down's, but what keeps me connected to my love of this profession is working for an organization that shares my values, treats candidates with respect and promises an interesting career path for years to come.
