Six Tips To Nail Your Video Interview
Six Tips To Nail Your Video Interview
I posted a resource video where I talked about the 6 Layoff Rebounding Tips anyone can take right now.
One of those bullets talked about preparing for the video interview. I thought now would be a good time to expand on that in a short article.
If your prospective employer invites you to a video interview, here are some tips to help you #NAILIT.
1. Test your equipment ahead of time. If possible, send and receive a video to a partner or friend and view the results. Is your camera lens clean? Does the mic work properly? Is your laptop/phone/tablet compatible with the technology your prospective employer is using?
2. Prepare your device to perform at its best. Do what you can to have access to as much bandwidth as possible. Shutdown running apps and turn off notifications. Prepare a sturdy resting place or tripod for your device.
3. Use earbuds, if necessary, to remove “echo effect”. During the Covid-19 Crisis, the TV was flooded with videos of artists doing interviews with TV hosts and they almost always are wearing some type of earphones, to minimize that distracting echo effect. This is one time you can learn something from Cardi B!
4. Control your interview environment. Is it brightly lit? Is it neat and orderly? Free of distractions like people, pets, sounds?
5. Be personable but professional. Treat the camera as the interviewer. Friendly but professional body language that gives off confidence is always a winner. Dressing in an outfit that makes you feel confident is a good start, and practicing with the technology will make it less and less of a distraction.
6. Research as much as you can about the company and the role, and craft a couple of questions that show you are thinking of the role, and how it might evolve. Giving an employer that you are very interested and thorough in your preparation give a hint of the kind of employee you are likely to be.
Putting these simple tips in place give you a great chance to have an excellent video interview and land that next great role.
