Six things I learnt from CIGRE 46
I spent this past week at my new favourite conference - CIGRE 46.
There were so many opportunities to learn, explore, meet incredible people and talk about challenges we are facing. It was difficult to not be overwhelmed with the amount of information coming my way.
Six - Six: It's worth the two year wait!
Cinq - Five: The world needs more case studies. I went to a presentation showcasing several case studies and practical examples, it's was the best. I was able to meet the presenters after and talk about how they would approach some of the challenges I am facing.
Quatre - Four: The best of the best attend. (If I have a transformer problem I know who I am going to call.) I was honoured to be invited into the Study Committee Meeting for A2 with the best transformer engineers from all over the world.
Trois - Three: CIGRE Australia Next Generation Network, NGN, has one of best programs in the world.
What learnt during the Young Members Forum is that Australia has one of the top programs in the world for promoting young members (Australian NGN members shown above) to be apart of the utilities of the future. NGN Australia continues to provide free membership to young members under 35, provides opportunities to get involved with the Australian Panels and the chance to win the prestigious Paris Scholarship.
Deux - Two: Take notes and follow up, you never know when you need to connect with that person.
Un - One: Be known! Some advice I was given which really stuck with me... Don't be afraid to ask questions, make spontaneous contributions or ask for clarification to get your name or brand out there.
If you can make it to next year’s symposium or the 2018 Session, you might be surprised at how much you learn over a week, how much you thought you knew but don't, how much you will enjoy the experience and maybe you will see me there too.

8 å¹´I'm glad you found it beneficial after the long journey to get there. The UK NGN members give very similar positive feedback. CIGRE works on the principle of the more you put in the more you get out, so stay engaged and build a global network of colleagues who you can call on in the future.
Acting Chief Engineer at Energy Queensland
8 å¹´I am glad you enjoyed it! The challenge now is to bring your learnings back into Ergon Energy (Energy Queensland) and make a difference. See you soon.

8 å¹´Thanks for sharing! It will certainly encourage new young members to be involved in CIGRE activities!
