Six Strategies for Navigating Politics and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

By Julia Lashay Israel

In today's increasingly polarized political climate, the intersection of politics and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) within the workplace can present both challenges and opportunities. For real estate brokerages, navigating this complex landscape thoughtfully can foster a respectful, productive and inclusive environment while avoiding potential conflicts that may arise from political discussions. Here, we will explore six key strategies for successfully managing the dynamics of politics and DEI within your market center:

1. Separate Diversity, Equity and Inclusion from Partisan Politics

Emphasize that DEI is about creating a fair and inclusive workplace for all, not about promoting specific political agendas. It is important to communicate that DEI initiatives aim to respect and value all associates, regardless of their political beliefs.

At Keller Williams, we celebrate our differences. We believe that each of us has the right to be our authentic self, live our true life, and pursue the opportunities we have always believed were possible. Our mission is to be the empowering community we all deserve, where everyone belongs and anyone can thrive.

2. Focus on Shared Values

Highlight common values of your brokerage, such as respect, fairness, and equality that underpin DEI and productive political discourse. Encourage discussions around how these values contribute to a positive work environment.

At Keller Williams, we believe that the company we keep can contribute to our lives in untold ways. To help cement this understanding, we’ve formalized a belief system that guides how we treat each other and how we do business. The MVVBP is what drives and guides us everyday. Focusing on the culture of the organization reminds associates that together everyone achieves more.

3. Provide Education and Training

Offer training on diversity, equity and inclusion principles, emphasizing their importance in creating a supportive and productive workplace. Include modules on respectful communication and managing political discussions in a way that aligns with DEI values.

At Keller Williams, we offer four courses to help you put diversity, equity, and inclusion at the forefront of your business.

4. Model Inclusive Leadership

Leadership should exemplify inclusive behavior by actively supporting inclusion initiatives and demonstrating respect for diverse political views. Transparent and open communication from leadership about the importance of diversity and inclusion can set a positive tone for the entire organization.

At Keller Williams, inclusion is a core pillar of who we are and how we uphold our culture of equity. We believe that each person brings a unique experience and perspective that reflects and empowers the communities where we live and serve. Inclusive leaders create a culture that fosters belonging, where everyone can bring their authentic selves to build thriving businesses and create opportunities for all.

5. Monitor and Address Issues Promptly

Be vigilant about any conflicts or issues that arise from political discussions and address them promptly. Stay in front of any issues by implementing clear policies and procedures in your market center. It may also be a good idea to implement clear processes for reporting and resolving complaints related to political discrimination or harassment.

6. Celebrate Diversity

Recognize and celebrate the diverse backgrounds and viewpoints of all associates. Organize events that highlight various cultural and social perspectives in a way that fosters inclusion. ? Promote activities and opportunities that build empathy, such as storytelling sessions where associates share their unique experiences and challenges. Stories have the power to challenge stereotypes, dispel misconceptions and promote cross-cultural understanding.?

Tune into the monthly diversity, equity and inclusion heritage months panels to hear the diverse and unique stories of all Keller Williams associates. Join the DEI community to learn more about these sessions.

By thoughtfully navigating the intersection of politics and DEI, your market center can create an inclusive environment that respects diverse political views while promoting fairness, equity, and inclusion. This approach not only enhances the culture of the organization, but also drives better engagement and productivity among associates.

Looks like a great plan and should work in theory, yet industry professionals and the country are on polar opposite sides of the spectrum. How does this get implemented in real life?
