What is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt

Lean Six Sigma Black Belts are primarily involved in the analysis, structuring, and measurement of performance issues. Their roles are vastly different from the other lean six sigma positions. Black Belt professionals are expected to lead continuous improvement projects and have extensive training in improving results through LEAN concepts and advanced statistical analysis techniques. Lean Six Sigma Black Belts can understand team dynamics and assign roles and responsibilities. They can understand and assign roles and responsibilities to team members in a project. Variation is always the source of quality issues (this is often understood at the leadership level), and it is the main source of emotional decision-making. Lean Six Sigma Black Belts are the ones who lead efforts to reduce variation in processes to improve results, and they are the ones who teach and counsel business leaders and personnel on how to reduce variation, make better choices, and improve results.

Lean Six Sigma Black Belts can understand all aspects of the DMAIC methodology according to Lean Six Sigma principles. They can train Green Belts and they get added support from Master Black Belts.

The Role of a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt

Lean Six Sigma Black Belts are also referred to as change agents. They are project leaders who work full-time to implement Lean Six Sigma process improvements using the DMAIC (Define Measure, Analyze and Improve, Control) and DFSS (Design for Six Sigma) methodologies. Lean Six Sigma Black Belts are highly skilled and knowledgeable in Lean Six Sigma methods and tools. They also facilitate and manage change. This helps to improve customer satisfaction and business productivity.

Lean Six Sigma Black Belts typically complete a higher level of Lean Six Sigma training and demonstrate mastery through completion of a Black Belt level project. Black Belts (along with Master Black Belts) coach Green Belts. After the Black Belt assignment has been completed, it is expected that a Black Belt will be promoted to a Master Black Belt or other significant business leadership position.

What are the Qualities of Lean Six Sigma Black Belt?
Passion to solve problems

Lean Six Sigma Black Belts are self-motivated and can take complex problems. They have a positive outlook. They are motivated to persevere even in demanding situations.

The Customer Comes First

Black Belts communicate that customer are always the recipients of processes and that customers (both external and internal) are the ultimate judge of quality products or services. Although the customer may not be familiar with Lean Six Sigma, understanding customer needs (otherwise known as Critical to Quality or CTQs) is key to improving process quality. A Black Belt can clearly explain how eliminating process variation is key to business improvement.

Excellent Communicators

This is crucial for their many roles: coaches, mentors, trainers, and coaches. Black Belts must be able to communicate clearly with all audiences, from operators to executives. Effective communicators can understand the needs of their audience and adapt the message to address them.

Understanding Business Acumen

They should be able to link projects with desired business results and have business knowledge. What makes a project more competitive and profitable for the company?

Lean Six Sigma Project Management

Six Sigma projects should be completed one at a time (but that is not always the case). The Black Belt must be able to manage multiple projects from the perspective of scope, requirements, and resources. Experience managing projects and knowledge of project management principles are crucial.

Change Leadership

Black Belts are known for their ability to act as change agents, regardless of what job they hold. Change agents and leaders can help to achieve positive change and gain support within their organization.

Knows they are not the “Sage on the Stage”

Black Belts, as well as any change agent, need to know that they are the “guides on the side” when it comes to facilitating change. They know that the SME (or Subject Matter Experts) have experience in the process and should be the group that implements change.

Leader and Team Player

Black Belts need to be able to work with and lead teams. They can understand the dynamics of team formation (storming, norming, performing). A Black Belt can have a good relationship with others, influence people, and motivate others to lead effectively.

Technical Aptitude

A Black Belt candidate does not need to be an engineer or a statistician. He or she must be able to analyze and collect data to determine an improvement strategy.

Results-Oriented

Black Belts will be expected to produce tangible financial results. They should be hardworking and quick to show success.
