Europe?Newsletter - September
?Welcome to your September newsletter.
This is the month when we often talk about going back to school or back to work, but maybe this isn’t ‘back to’ , maybe we are starting something new? New beginnings in a different school, job, team or role. Wherever we are and whatever we’re starting, one thing that is hardwired in our humanity is the need for belonging; a feeling of connection and shared identity, values or interests.?
Research ?suggests that?feeling a sense of belonging in multiple groups supports self esteem, this is one reason why?Six Seconds actively encourages people to connect and feel a sense of belonging in the Europe and Global network. There are lots of opportunities this month for you to get active and connect with others, we look forward to seeing you soon.

Using EQ to Build Belonging and Trust
As many of the young people in our lives start school for the first time this month, or return to a social landscape that may feel a little different from the way it did before the summer holidays, the topic of belonging, safety and trust is more important than ever.
For the final third of 2022, the topic of our EQ Cafés is?Belonging and Empathy.?EQ Cafés are free, fun sessions for people keen to learn more about EQ. In this café, the focus will be on why belonging matters, how to use empathy and EQ to strengthen belonging, and how this can help us to build sustainable communities.?Search our Events page ?for EQ Cafés to find one near you, or an online café that suits your schedule.
As part of the?Pop-Up Festival back in 2018, Six Seconds created an activity called?Growing Belonging ?- for anybody working with children (or even adults), it's worth having a look - the page also includes some powerful resources! (Find out more about this year's?Pop-Up Festival here ).
You may enjoy this short video from the Six Seconds YouTube channel:?How to build Trust and Connection , which highlights the importance of leaders, teachers or managers tapping into their own emotional intelligence in order to start building a healthy atmosphere where others feel safe to be themselves.
Something else we know about trust is that is fuels high performing, innovative teams.?Read this article ?that outlines research done at Google and how they measure and build feelings of safety. Community Spotlight - Colin Cafferty
This month's Community Spotlight is?Colin Cafferty , an Empowerment Coach and Network Leader in Berlin.?Click here ?to watch our interview with Colin on our YouTube channel.?
Where in the world do I live??
I’ve been living in Berlin for the past 6 years or so, but I originally come from the wild and rugged West of Ireland. I like the relaxed pace of the city and the easy access to Nature. Berlin is known for its crazy nightlife and not so many people are familiar with its more peaceful side. I’m fortunate to have a large park right next to where I live.
What am I trained in or what do I specialise in??
I originally studied biochemistry - it seems like several lifetimes ago now! After a stint in a biotech company, I spent quite a few years working in corporate banking in London. I was also an environmental documentary photographer for a while, and I’ve worked with refugees in Berlin.?
I only discovered Six Seconds a year ago. Since then, I’ve become a Certified EQ Practitioner and Assessor and I’m nearing the end of my journey as an EQ Coach. I’m also an active Network Leader for the Six Seconds Community.?
What am I best known for?
Well, that would depend on whom you ask! Let me tell you instead what I’d like to be best known for – compassion, authenticity, curiosity, creativity, and courage. Not asking for much am I? It’s a work in progress…
How has EQ helped me both personally and professionally?
I’ve struggled a lot with my emotions in the past. It’s been a long journey to learn healthy ways of coping. When I came to Six Seconds in 2021, I took the SEI leadership assessment and again six months later after I finished the EQ Practitioner course. My scores were up across the board – a testimonial to the quality of the programme and the time and effort I invested.
My plan for the future is to combine EQ and nature connection as both a coach and facilitator in service of my noble goal - to nurture emotional well-being so that you flourish in service of a fairer society and a healthier planet.?
What is the one EQ technique that you use that you would recommend to everyone to try?
I’m going to go with the six seconds pause. After all, there must be some value in it if the founders decided to name the organisation after it, right? The key is to catch yourself in the moment that you are finding it difficult to navigate your emotions. I recite my phone number backwards or multiply numbers in my head. You can read more about the neuroscience behind it on the Six Seconds website.
