Six Quick Ways to Combat Phishing

Phishing attacks are the most prevalent type of online crime. Usually, the opportunity to catch you off guard is taken advantage of by scammers who are aware of your email overload. These malicious emails present themselves as coming from well-known people or reliable businesses. They could include hyperlinks to fraudulent websites impersonating well-known retail businesses (such as Amazon, eBay, or personal banking), where you would be required to provide your email address, password, or other private data. Additionally, some messages contain harmful attachments designed to harm your computer or other devices.

According to the American Federal Trade Commission, impostor scams are the most common type of fraud in the US and across the globe. To deceive you into contacting a cybercriminal and disclosing your credit card number and other personal information, a recent impostor scam uses phishing emails that lead to vishing or voice phishing attacks.

To stay safe from online scams, kindly check the following

1. Beware of emails that are intended to stir your emotions. Criminals use threats, a false sense of urgency, or an offer that seems too good to be true to try and catch you off guard.

2. To avoid two-factor phishing scams, be wary of unexpected Two-Step Login prompts.

3. Before you click, double-check links by hovering your cursor over them to see the URL.

4. Never click on links or download anything from unreliable or unexpected sources. It's always a good idea to exercise caution when opening links and attachments in emails, regardless of who sent them.

5. Check the phishing bowl and the communications of your trusted business to see whether a message that requests you to open a link or perform an odd action, such as sending a gift card, has been sent to you unexpectedly. Inform the IT Security Office about any suspected fraud.

6. Verify the mailing address. The message could have originated from a fraudulent or compromised account.?
