Six Mindshift Exercises to Forgive

Six Mindshift Exercises to Forgive

“Forgiveness is not always easy. At times, it feels more painful than the wound we suffered, to forgive the one that inflicted it. And yet, there is no peach without forgiveness.” ~Marianne Williamson

Last week’s blog talked about forgiveness and the fact that it is a purely selfish act that allows you to let go and move forward in your life. Forgiveness isn’t easy, but as promised here are six ways to help you forgive.

If you haven’t read last week’s post  go back and take a look, it will give you more information about why forgiveness is something you must do for yourself.

Look for the Lesson:  Every experience has a lesson. Maybe it’s teaching you how strong you are, what you value, how you will/won’t be treated, helping you set boundaries, etc. It’s important that you take a step back and ask, “What is the lesson in this” and then learn that lesson.

Gratitude: Practice being thankful and noticing all the good things in your life. When we’re focused on the positive things we don’t have time to focus on the negative.  What you think about or focus on, attracts more of the same into your life!

Maintain Perspective: This can be very difficult! Sometimes we’re hurt by someone in the heat of the moment or because they are under the influence of alcohol/drugs. Maybe someone just lost their job, has had a death in their family, etc. These are not excuses for bad behavior; however they may be contributing factors. Ask yourself what may have been contributing to the situation and maintain perspective.

Write a letter: Take the time to write a letter to the person that has hurt you. You may start by saying something like; I forgive you for all the hurt you’ve caused me.  You may want to proceed with a description of what they’ve done. You may want to just write . . . get out all your made feelings, speak your mind no matter how it comes out, but remember to add a line that says, I forgive you.  You can then decide if you want to send it, shred it, throw it in the garbage, burn it, etc. . . .writing helps release.

Meditate: Being still, calming your mind and centering yourself will allow you to be at peace with yourself. Meditation has many health benefits and should be something you work into your day ever day, even if it’s just for a few minutes.  Release the toxic thoughts from your body, mind and soul.

Remember this is about you, not them: Remind yourself that you’re doing this for you, not for them.  Forgiveness is about letting go so you are not carrying around the negative energy and baggage, allowing you to move forward. There is something a bit revengeful, in a good way, about living a wonderful, healthy life!
