"Hair brings one self-image into focus; it is vanity's proving ground. Hair is terribly personal, a tangle of mysterious prejudices. "
- Shana Alexander.
I find it fascinating to see how a hairstylist, skillfully unites scattered strands of hair with absolute dexterity and adroitness. Growing up, making a person’s hair was a big NO for me, it did make my hair stand on end!
I thought I had garnered the skills of hair styling in high school when my friends and I would come together during break periods and plait the tip of our cornrows like it was that easy! Plaiting my hair was like going to a war zone. I never looked forward to making it due to how painful it was for me. I realized later that I had a very soft scalp... Too bad!
Shortly after the first wave of the pandemic, I opted into learning this great skill, and since then, I have found its usefulness.
Hair styling taught me the following;
1. I could learn whatever it was I wanted to, as long as I focused on it.
My perspective on hairdressing took a different turn when I made my first weave. I had mixed feelings about it; I was nervous. Nonetheless, it was a magical moment for me, seeing the art I could create with my hands.
2. Mathematics in Hair styling? Yeah right!
From creating straight lines to lines that are curved, from cutting to making patterns, math is the bedrock of hair styling. It takes a lot of skill and calculated work to make sure all weaves are even and the hair is neatly woven. Hair styling is practical arithmetic.
3. Goodbye to Bad Hair Days!
For me, this is the best part of learning this art. Depending on how intentional you are about learning this art, a time will come when you would be able to fix a very quick and easy hairdo for yourself, even without the assistance of a second party.
4. Difference in Hair Types and Textures
Just as our faces are different, so are our hair types. It ranges from straight to wavy hairs, kinky to curly hairs. It takes time and effort to succeed in creating amazing hairstyles with hair types such as these (and a plethora of others)
5. Hair care tips.
Probably the most conventional, we all know our hair should be property catered to. The following steps should be considered when taking care of the hair.
? Wash as condition your hair regularly. Nobody would like their hair to smell awful and certainly, no one would love to hang around someone with smelly hair. All hair ought to be healthy and grow at a smooth pace.
? Comb/brush your hair regularly to de-tangle it.
? Avoid adding coloring treatments to your hair.
? Trim your hair regularly because it fosters hair growth.
? It is recommended that your hair is plaited regularly because it helps prevent hair breakage.
6. Consistency is key.
Consistency is a "no-brainer" in acquiring any kind of skill. It is that underlying factor that makes you better at what you do. Commitment to learning would be worth it in the end.
Becoming a big wig takes a lot of hard work. I have learned and yet, still learning. I am on the road to becoming valuable. I hope you find this helpful.
For now,
Duty calls!!
