Are you performing at your best in all areas of life? I recently came across Brendon Burchard’s book, High Performance Habits: How Extraordinary People Become that Way, and was inspired by his six habits that lead to high performance. If you are not high-performing, it’s not too late to cultivate these habits in your life and get on the path to success. Brendon has made this resource available for free on his podcast, so you can learn more without even picking up the book. We’ll give you a brief sneak peek of the habits Brendon recommends that create an extraordinary life.
1. SEEK CLARITY
Be more intentional about four categories: self, social, skills, and service. Imagine your future best self and be that self today. To be a high performer, one must develop their own curriculum in life. Without goals, there is no growth. Sift out distractions because, without clarity, there won’t be any change.
2. GENERATE ENERGY
Brendon recommends that you “release tension” and “set intention” so that you remain focused during the day. Master the transitions that naturally occur by using that time to renew your energy. Take short breaks, anticipate positive outcomes, meditate, and release negative emotions. Optimize your health so that you are alert, excellent at managing stress, and able to stay positive despite life’s demands.
3. RAISE NECESSITY
Necessity demands that you act. Ask yourself this question: who needs you to excel today? Experiment in life until you find something that you can obsess over. Verbalize why you want to reach your goals and spend time with people that support you.
4. INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY
Work and life balance are attainable. Monitor the quality or progress in ten major life arenas: health, family, friends, intimate relationships, mission/work, finances, adventure, hobby, spirituality, and emotion. Determine what your goals are in each of these areas and think of ways to improve. Brainstorm five skills you need to be your best self, and then set out to master those things in the next three years.
5. DEVELOP INFLUENCE
High performers grow by influencing others to grow. Be a positive influence on those around you, shaping how others think by suggesting new ideas. Challenge others to excel and serve as a role model for your community.
6. DEMONSTRATE COURAGE
Voice your ambitions and ask for help if needed. Holding back, instead of chasing your dreams, will only weigh on your mind. Instead of complaining in the face of hardship, act. The struggle is a natural and necessary part of the process. Brendon recommends finding someone to fight for because you will do more for others than on your own behalf. Often courage comes from serving one person at a time. We recommend reading or listening in-depth to the six habits of high performance.
