Six Easy Tips To Boost Interview Confidence
You’ve worked hard to get noticed by your dream company. After going through a lengthy online application process, getting an introduction to the recruiter through a mutual network connection, and writing your most compelling cover letter, you finally received an invitation to interview.
How do you present your most confident self in order to move forward in the interview process? Prepare well. You may feel like you have little control over the interview process, but you have more than you think with some preparation.
Try these six tips to help you prepare, while keeping it simple.
1. Research The Company - Are there recent product launches, category expansions, new leadership appointments, or investor infusions of capital hitting the company’s PR airwaves? Has the company’s financial position changed as a result of weathering the Covid-19 storm? Being current with company news will help you answer two common questions that interviewers often ask candidates. 1) Why do you want to work here? 2) What questions do you have?
2. Know Your Points Of View - Think about an important trend (e.g., technology, go-to-market strategy, expert approach) that impacts your industry or profession. Practice a brief position statement so you can succinctly share your point of view on the topic and demonstrate how you keep current on important issues with your profession.
3. Know Your Audience - Ask your recruiter or HR point of contact for the names and titles of all of your interviewers so you can learn about their professional experience (e.g., LinkedIn or press releases) ahead of time. This can help you anticipate the types of questions they may ask. Get their email addresses too so that you can send thank you emails to them right after the interview.
4. Know The Logistics - Ask your recruiter for all of the logistical details so you can plan your travel route to the location for onsite interviews, test your technology platform for video interviews, plan your attire, and clear your schedule with plenty of buffer time before and after the interview. These seemingly small details can make or break a critical first impression. Don’t overlook these.
5. Rest and Fuel - Interviews can sometimes take longer than expected. Nervous energy can be more taxing than you may think. As much as you can, get a good night of rest the night before your interview. Eat well or have a light snack before your interview so you’re not distracted by hunger.
6. Highlight Your “Best Three” - Review your top three qualifications that map to the position’s top three requirements. Having a brief example of how you've used those qualifications to add value to a current or past employer will go a long way in showcasing your capabilities. These are your best three. These are the areas you love to mentor others in. Since you’re known as the go-to person for these three qualifications, your confidence and enthusiasm will naturally come through.
If you’re looking for a way to boost your confidence for an upcoming important job interview, try these six preparation tips to replace nervousness with confidence and enthusiasm. You got this!
