Situational Awareness in Realtime?

Situational Awareness in Realtime?

Speaking from experience, we did have enough yummy MREs to eat and a Water Buffalo filled to the top, but when it came to Communications...Well, let's just say it was far perfect. I vividly remember the first time Sadam had his men shoot a SCUD over our AO, the only notifications/warnings were by SINCGARS with a an OE-254. Basically, the radio operators from US units were relaying the impending danger by passing the message from one radio to the next radio, to the next radio, etc. and etc. Picture, if you will, the domino effect. Well, you can imagine what happened. Yes! We got the message at the same time that the SCUD was zooming over our heads. It continued that way every day at 1800 hours for weeks. Whew! Enough reminiscing of BAD memories!!!

Getting back on track now...Communications has come a long way from drums, horns, flags, and riders on horseback. These were some of the early methods the military used to send messages over distances.

Many modern pieces of military communications equipment are built to both encrypt and decode transmissions and survive rough treatment in hostile climates. They use different frequencies to send signals to other radios and to satellites.

Military communications - or "comms" - are activities, equipment, techniques, and tactics used by the military in some of the most hostile areas of the earth and in challenging environments such as battlefields, on land, underwater and also in air. Military comms include command, control and communications and intelligence and were known as the C3I model before computers were fully integrated. The U.S. Army expanded the model to C4I when it recognized the vital role played by automated computer equipment to send and receive large, bulky amounts of data.

Today, War Fighters must be armed with situational awareness on the ground in real time. Here are a few sites of which I have come across that does provide some very useful information to our Commanders on the ground and those in the rear.

I could go on and on, however, I'll wrap it up here. Bottom Line Up Front, the War Fighters cannot fight the good fight without real time data. I think the picture above says it all. I'll open it up now to those that may have better information than me. Please share any known links/information to "realtime data" that may be useful to our service members.

My prayers go out to all that are serving and those that have served. Hooah!
