The Situation In The Red Sea Is Dire

So I wrote previously about my deep concern that if the Houthis were to cut the submarine cables in the Red Sea in the Straits of Bab Al-Mandap, India could go majorly dark and worse, it would bring global communications to a crawl.

Well, the situation is worse than I thought. Even if the Houthis do not cut the cables, the damage is already done. The insurance companies who insure the submarine cableships have already declared the region as a war zone and are no longer insuring the cableships. The vendors have therefore decided to stop all activity in the region.

Which means that all new construction has completely halted for the half a dozen funded cables owned by the OTTs and carriers in India, Europe and Asia.

And even worse, the countdown has begun on the maintenance side waiting for cables to break in the normal course of business which cannot be repaired until the war is over.

The Omani government offered to send a Navy fleet to accompany the cableships but got turned down by the vendors for lack of insurance and not wanting to put the lives of their employees at risk.

So while the best minds in the governments of the world try to find a solution, the near time solution could be to visit your local temple, church or mosque seeking divine intervention.

hello Sunil Tagare this is quite the situation and i believe the operators have postponed operations until people come to a safe understanding of what does this mean. yes i totally agree with you, if they find them then they will cut them 'hopefully' with a hand tool! but the maintenance or repair work will cease and that is the biggest problem with finding a solution to fixing this, proactive or reactive there is a brick wall. i am not sure i would want to sit of yemen and conduct a 3 day repair !.. so i would not expect my colleagues to do it on our behalf whilst we sit in the safety of democracy. maybe there is a solution but we must think outside the box of the normal procedure and work within a different structure. maybe for another day.

Very interesting read Sunil Tagare what is your source to state that operators have postponed cable laying operations?
