Sitting without Expectations

You are receiving this because you are one of 79,109 people who have pledged to meditate daily for peace.

If you ever have trouble meditating regularly (many of us do), try this:

  • Make a commitment to sit quietly at the beginning and end of each day.
  • Release any expectations regarding how long you sit—it might be two minutes or ten. The duration doesn't matter.

What matters is that you establish the habit of sitting quietly at the beginning and end of your day.

When I do this, I visualize placing my "self"—my body, personal history, opinions, thoughts, fears, and attachments—into a secure room. That's right, I take "Bruce" and put him in a large, safe, out-of-the-way room.

All that's left sitting quietly is my Awareness, which now has no obligations, concerns, or agenda.

Once I manage to set "Bruce" aside, it's pure peace.

Sometimes this state lasts for an extended period, and I get to recharge my energy. Other times, "Bruce" barges back in after a few minutes.

I put my name in quotes because my daily self is not truly me. It's a persona created by society—my parents, relatives, teachers, peers, neighbors, colleagues, and influencers. If I had been born poor in Stockholm or wealthy in Buenos Aires, "Bruce" would be a completely different person today.

My Awareness, however, carries no baggage or outside influence once I put "Bruce" away.

For me, this is the simplest and easiest way to access a peaceful, beautiful state.

I suspect the complete lack of expectations makes it easier for me to stick with this practice day after day.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has a similar practice or who tries out the approach I've described here.

Thanks in advance for sharing this issue with others.

This is how I enter peace: I seek God, obey God, and rely on God. My peace starts from within. I can’t spread peace outwardly until I’ve got peace within by doing what I stated above ?? I have ??? peace. Peace be with you????

Set aside our personas created by society...brilliant, Bruce! That exercise not only releases us from the expectations laid upon each of us (and that we take upon ourselves!), it give us the space to recognize how at our core there is no difference - we are all one??????.

Absolutely love this! I get how “Bruce” can come barging in sometimes, this perspective was just what I needed to further lean into utilizing the power of the mind to find peace from within. You summarized the importance of this process (meditation) perfectly! We owe it to ourselves to find balance in a world that offers us none.
