Sitting disease: How Harmful is Too Much Sitting?

Sitting disease: How Harmful is Too Much Sitting?

We all know that sitting for too long can be harmful to our health, but how much is too much??

The answer to this question depends on a number of factors, including your age and level of physical activity.

The problem with sitting all day is that it can lead to metabolic changes in the body that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This is often referred to as “sitting disease” or “sedentary lifestyle syndrome”.

Recent research on Sitting disease was done by Dr. James Levine in a 2015 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

This study found that prolonged sitting can lead to harmful changes in metabolism and blood sugar levels, which can result in an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer.?

How To Reduce Time Spent Sitting?

There are many ways to reduce the amount of time you spend sitting;

  • The most obvious solution is to exercise more often. If you can't make it to the gym or out on a run every day, try taking short walks around your neighbourhood.?
  • You should also set reminders throughout the day to get up from your desk and move around for at least five minutes at a time (even if it's just going into another room). This will help keep blood flowing throughout your body, so it doesn't pool in one area like when you're sitting still for long periods of time!

Final Takeaway?

Note that little lifestyle adjustments like; taking the stairs instead of elevators or escalators whenever possible can make a huge difference.
