THE 'SIT DOWN WEE'? PRODUCTIVITY HACK (AND OTHERS)

THE 'SIT DOWN WEE' PRODUCTIVITY HACK (AND OTHERS)

THE ‘SIT-DOWN-WEE’ (AND 3 OTHER TOP PRODUCTIVITY HACKS) ??

I’ll be honest.

I’m a bit nervous about posting this.

But one of our company values is “We are open and real”

So here goes...

Last week I had a meet-up with my good mate Ryan Pinnick (yes - if I’m going down I’m taking everyone with me!)

We’re in the same kind of business, so we get together every so often to share ideas, best practices, explore potential collaborations, etc.

And we got onto the subject of using up DEAD TIME in your day.

It came up in conversation because I took my phone to the toilet with me.

I explained to Ryan I’d been so busy that I’d started having ‘sit down wees’ to give me a valuable minute or two to answer emails, etc!

Maybe that was an over-share??? ??

Maybe not!

His response was:

“Dude, you only just worked that out? I’ve been having sit down wees for years!”

So I guess you’ve just learned something new about me and Ryan, that maybe you didn’t *need* to know lol!

But, it does raise the point:

How you can reduce ‘dead time’ in your day and maximise productivity?

For me, the big one is driving.

I probably spend an hour a day on average in the car...

To and from the gym - that’s 15 mins each way.

To and from the office - same again.

So before I know it, I’ve done an hour.

And that’s DEAD TIME (I.e. time I’m not able to carry out my ‘highest value tasks’ - or £1000 tasks as I call them)

Things like creating content, strategy for growing the business, delivering training, etc.

So, at the start of the year I got really focused on using this ‘dead time’ more effectively.

It’s worked pretty well.

Generally I now use that time for 2 things:

1. To listen to business or self-development-type audio books

This is definitely a high-value (or £1000) task.

As the saying goes - the investment in your education is one that will give you the greatest return.

2. Make client/team/strategic partner calls

Again, serving clients, leading my team, and forming strategic partnerships are all ‘£1000 tasks’.

Of course, I do have a team that do the majority of the client coaching/support, but I think it’s nice for clients to experience the personal touch every now and then.

Another obvious way I found to reduce ‘dead time’ was to get someone else to drive on longer journeys.

E.g. today I’m travelling down to London to deliver a 3-day event. I’ll get one of the team to drive, meaning I can use that time to prep my content, respond to emails, create posts for social, etc.

*Thanks to Rob Moore for the reminder on this one - I’d like to think I’ve now returned the favour with my trail-blazing ‘sit-down-wee’ strategy lol!

Anyway, I hope something in this post has given you a little idea of how you can reduce dead time in your day, to help you get more done.

I’m always looking for more even more ideas and ways to increase my productivity and reduce dead time.

So...

Nick, this is hilarious, as a girl I am constantly using that time! However, time when you are perceived as “doing nothing” is not always dead time! Some of my best ideas come when taking time to breathe and “be” !

I have a different view Nick. And I’m not taking the piss (sorry). I love creating dead time because it gives me time to breathe and to think and have fun and be creative. There are times when I’m incredibly busy and then I utilise all known ways to claw back time and post / email / contact key people / do the boring admin stuff. But mostly I crave dead time which is why I typically only work 4 days a week. Friday is for golf / kids / pin ball / fun / meeting friends. Never embraced the idea of a 5 day week. Fun is a key value though so got to follow through...!!!

Hmmmm. Just sit down wee... no phone. Also - dead space can be energising space - not dead, not empty - just space. I make use of car trips to listen to audio, sure. But when I pee it gets my full attention ??
