Siskel and Ebert Describe Wardrobes

Can clothes make the movie better? Good clothes in a bad movie won't lead to a better experience. I'm Gene Siskel from the Chicago Tribune.

"And I'm Roger Ebert from The Chicago Sun-Times. Not only is It Ends With Us an entertaining film with more substance than one expects in the summer, Blake Lively looks good in every outfit.

GS: Movies are supposed to set a standard. Too many dress for comfort nowadays. Humphrey Bogart always wore a sports jacket.

RE: That was a different time. Many dry cleaners have gone out of business because there is not as much demand for their services. When people dress like they are "Only going to Walmart" they don't care.

GS: As I famously said when people dressed better- everyone who you see left the house thinking they looked good. Even people who wear Crocs.

RE: Some Crocs look like the masks from the opening robbery in Heat. I would rather reflect on that film and how well dressed the criminals and police officers were.

GS: It seems like the world has two kinds of people. The ones who find Crocs hideous and the ones who wear them.

RE: There is no accounting for taste. Can a good wardrobe enhance a movie?

GS: Sometimes. The Untouchables was entertaining. The Armani suits added another element.

RE: Don't forget about the Jean Paul Gaultier fashions in The Fifth Element. They made the film look futuristic.

GS: Movies really don't create a better future, fashion wise. There were certain trends in the 2015 of Back To the Future Part Two. The one film that really created a look for a brighter future was Star Trek III: The Search For Spock.

RE: The uniforms in Star Trek: The Motion Picture looked like pajamas.

GS: Which is futuristic because many wear clothes that look like sleepwear even if they aren't.

RE: I have seen that and wish I hadn't. The point I was trying to make was the uniforms in the second film and through the remainder of the original cast's films were better looking.

GS: You cannot forget Sulu's cape in the third movie. It was a very good look.

RE: It was definitely unique. What did you think of Alien: Romulus?

GS: Fashion wise?

RE: Not necessarily.

GS: It was better than the prequels. Some Ridley Scott movies look good and are not that interesting.

RE: I thought this one looked good and kept me engaged. Having young characters figure things out in the moment- that's what young people do.

GS: It's an Alien movie so you know the crew who starts out is not going to return intact. They could be trained and ready or neophytes and many will give birth to new aliens.

RE: Since this film takes place between Alien and Aliens- is the mentioning of "The Company" allegorical of Rupert Murdoch? The Company was used a lot in Aliens and they seemed to care more about profits than any person the aliens would kill.

GS: That is a good question. The media has changed since 1986 when Aliens was released. Wages have stagnated and billionaires cry "Socialism" as they find ways not to pay taxes. I don't think that was a hidden motif in this film. They were improving synthetic people.

RE: We don't currently have synthetic people.

GS: Except the ones who depend on ChatGPT.

RE: Artificial Intelligence advanced so quickly James Cameron has shown interest in making another Terminator movie.

GS: Franchises never seem to end anymore. Another Terminator would have more value than another Avatar movie.

RE: Those always look good. Offhand I cannot recall any of the characters or the situations they were in. The next movie will make a lot of money and no one will recall it.

GS: It isn't even polarizing. No one dislikes Avatar. No one is passionate about it, either.

RE: Except James Cameron who has devoted his twilight years to this franchise. (To the camera). That's all the time we have. Dress a little better because you never know who you will inspire-

GS: As you wear a non flattering sweater.

RE: The sports jacket covers anything unflattering. Shall I remind you of your flannel phase in the big mustache years? You did sell the Saturday Night Fever suit at a sizable profit. For Gene Siskel I am Roger Ebert and the balcony is closed.
