Sirikoi Lodge

Sirikoi Lodge

Sirikoi Lodge is a family-owned eco-lodge in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Northern Kenya.

Chances are, you've heard about it already; if not, here’s the gist. This is the lodge that made it to Conde Naste Traveler's Gold list of favorite hotels in the world three times back to back—in 2016, 2017, and 2018, not to mention the uncountable accolades it has bagged as the best eco-resort regionally and nationally.?

That's no mean feat.?

Four luxury tents, a separate cottage, and a private main house make up what would, at face value, easily be dismissed as an ordinary eco-chic African home in a secluded rustic savanna.?

But there is more. The details are what make it stand out.

How to get there

Sirikoi is accessible in two ways: by road and by air.

If you choose the air option, there is a scheduled flight from either Wilson or the Jomo Kenyatta airport in Nairobi, about 50 minutes away to the Lewa airstrip, from where the lodge is half an hour's drive.?

If by road, you'd have to endure a five-hour drive from Nairobi, though the journey shouldn't be boring as it would be through a scenic sprawl of lush and green Mount Kenya highlands.?

The majority of people prefer flights due to the length of the drive.?

Upon arrival, you'll be awe-struck by the grand beauty of the scenery. This amazing setup sits against the backdrop of native acacia grooves, overlooking a natural waterhole that has turned into a stop-off point for wild animals.? Sometimes, the animals lurk so close to the dining deck of the main cottage that you’d actually touch them.?

Part of the reason Sirikoi is a wonder is that it is right inside the Lewa conservancy, a wildlife sanctuary spanning some 63,000 acres of natural wilderness homing some of the world’s rarest animal species, including the endangered white Rhino and Gravy zebra.?

The establishment is quiet, save for the chattering of birds, growls, squeaks, and snorts of the elephants and other animals that have made the place a rest point in their migratory thoroughfare.

Even more stunning is its unique positioning. The lodge sits at the point where on one side,? Kenya’s Northern arid plains–a rather parched mass of earth roll up, yet on the other, adjoins the foot of Mount Kenya exuding succulent and lush greenery, magically abutting two opposites into a sophisticated, fashionable union.

The lodge setup

The setup comprises three structures:?

This is also the primary cottage featuring three en-suite bedrooms (a Master Suite and a separate bedroom cottage with two en-suite bedrooms). It has a central living and dining area.

It has a raised lounge, boasting an extended deck stretching towards an exterior tree shelter overlooking a scenic view of undulating well-maintained lawns, a nearby watering hole, and a swathe of savanna with shrubs and trees spanning towards the horizon. An undisturbed sight of plane games grazing on the ground is a sure bet. Moreover, each cottage has a private deck from which visitors may have the rear experience of an up-close encounter with the migrating animals and, every once in a while, even have meals alongside the resident giraffes.

Sirikoi is where the simple meets the complex.

Sirikoi is intricate in the making. Its simplicity creates a minimalist touch, but the fine details evolve into a sophisticated natural wonder, and that’s the actual surprise. For this reason, it is not hard to see that the owners—the Roberts, are pushing boundaries showcasing their more than 50 years of heritage of exemplary safari culture.

Sirikoi is where the modern meets the old.

Sirikoi is a perfect example of the vintage/modern interplay. The décor is tinged with traditional cultural tastes, but the furniture features present-day themes. To see clearly where this juxtaposition comes into play, visit the luxury tents and experience firsthand the splurge of exotic touches with a mix of native-styled interiors.?

But there is more to the Sirikoi experience than just the animals and the lodge setup.?

A staycation in the most native parts of Africa with predators loitering in the skirting unbothered is virtually every visitor's highlight.?

The sundowners in bonfire camps in cold breezes amidst slow swishes of swaying acacia branches, the smell of the burning wood evoking carmine embers into the air, and the echoes of the chirping sound of crickets in the dark thickets are the charms that will subject you to the magical powers of nature which you'll willfully surrender unto, detaching from the world. The result is that you’ll feel more acutely alive than you ever have. Sirikoi is the safari equivalent of meditation—there's soul talk and a deep personal connection with nature. Those who have visited have confessed to having taken with them something hard to explain in words, something that is better felt.?

During the day, there would never be a shortage of pastime activities to indulge in. Out in the overland drives, you'll see giraffes, zebras, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos; you name it. And the close-up connection will be a feeling to behold.?

With an approach that appeals to travel purists through a style that sticks to originality and authenticity, Sirikoi offers the perfect natural peace for mental and spiritual healing, relaxing, unwinding, and holidaying. Take the plunge.?
