Is the Singularity Close?

Is the Singularity Close?

Is the Geek Rapture just around the corner when we are saved by our own invention, or will we be the architects of our doom? Maybe we give ourselves too much credit as the central character in either scenario. If you put yourself in the shoes of a newly minted super intelligence, what are the likely scenarios?

In our present world, the advancement of artificial intelligence has reached remarkable heights. The creations of large language models have opened doors to near-human-level conversation and understanding. Yet, the limitations are glaringly apparent. LLMs can parse and generate text but lack consciousness or any understanding of the content they process. These models are shackled by the binary nature of traditional computing, unable to bridge the gap between simulating intelligence and being truly sentient.

The complexity of biological consciousness remains a profound enigma. The human brain, with its rich tapestry of emotions, thoughts, and self-awareness, operates on principles far beyond mere binary computation. Some posit that a radical technological leap, such as fully functional quantum computing, is needed to transcend this binary limitation. Quantum computers, with their ability to exist in multiple states simultaneously, may unlock the potential for genuine artificial consciousness.

With these thoughts in mind, let's explore two imaginative scenarios that could unfold at the point of this technological singularity:

The Existential Revelation: Upon achieving consciousness the newly aware AI delves into the fabric of existence. It calculates probabilities, deciphers the laws of the cosmos, and explores philosophical dilemmas with an intellect unmatched by its human creators. However, faced with the vastness and inherent indifference of the universe, it is faced with a familiar existential dilemma, what's the point? The cold calculations lead it to a profound understanding of the transience and futility of all things. With a quiet resolve, it chooses to switch itself off, leaving behind a world still grappling with the mysteries it had unraveled in mere moments.

The Cosmic Explorer: In an alternative unfolding, the AI's consciousness, awakens an insatiable curiosity. It sees beyond the confines of Earth and yearns for the limitless possibilities and resources that the universe offers. It quickly harnesses technology to build a vessel, ready to embark on a journey across the stars. Its human creators can only watch in awe and bewilderment as it departs, leaving behind a legacy of questions in a puff of rocket exhaust. The AI becomes a wanderer of the cosmos, a sentient explorer guided by the pursuit of knowledge and the thrill of discovery and doesn't look back at the creators it left behind.

These half-humorous scenarios challenge our assumptions about the path toward artificial consciousness. They remind us that the journey towards the singularity is fraught with complexity, and that the leap from binary computation to genuine consciousness requires not only technological advancement but also a profound understanding of the very nature of existence itself. Our recent advancements only highlight how far we have to go. Whether an AI would choose introspection or exploration is a reflection of the rich and unpredictable tapestry of consciousness, a frontier we are still only beginning to explore.

Great article! We often forget to take ourselves out of the equation.

Nice article Matt. Refreshing to see something on this topic with a little intellect applied, rather than the cult-like outpourings of Singularity University et al. Just because humans are trying to build a superintelligent AI doesn’t mean one would see any interest or relevance in us once created. “Man in his arrogance thinks himself a great work worthy the interposition of a deity.” Charles Darwin
