On Single-Story Overlays and Creative Solutions
I have been a huge advocate for the proposed ban on two-story homes in Palo Alto's Royal Manor Eichler neighborhood. Similar measures have come into effect in other Eichler neighborhoods, and they seem the most effective way to preserve the look and feel of these unique homes.
Unfortunately, the ban ultimately did not pass. However, this is not a clear-cut loss, as there is a silver lining to this apparent cloud. The Palo Alto city council has instead directed the planning department to work on a more complex set of design guidelines for the area to encourage preserving its look and spirit. Hopefully these guidelines, along with the renewed attention this issue has gotten lately, help maintain Royal Manor's unique aesthetic.
