Single Rule to Set Yourself Up for Success in 2020

Reading titles like this end of last year made me very stressed.

Everyone on LinkedIn was going above and beyond about "the right way to set up goals", "ultimate goal setting guide", "why setting goals is so important?"...

I am sure, I was not the only one having a little panic attack thinking if I have enough goals set for next year and how am I planing to reach them. Because I did not set goals for this year.

There are more important things than setting goals. Yes, I said it.

Why? I like Arthur Ashes quote: “Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.” Could not agree more. It is good to know where you are heading, however, you will learn a lot on the go and that will make reaching destination more special or maybe not, but that is the essence of it.

With that said, I have not written down goals for this year and I am totally fine with that. Instead, I have a roadmap planned out that shall lead me to new places. How does it differ from list of goals? It is like buying a bus ticket that shall take me to one place without knowing how many stops and where it will stop in between compared to buying a plane ticket to final destination.

goal planing

Please do not beat yourself up about goal setting and how you will get there.

Instead analyze your previous experiences to understand why things did / did not work out the way you planned. That is the single most important rule to set yourself up for success! I believe this to be the greatest way to thrive, by understanding and reflecting on yourself. Knowing why some things did work out and some did not will make you realize what is that you need to work on to make it work for you next time. Nothing beats a person who knows themselves.

Invest in yourself and do not allow other peoples subjective advice make you feel insecure about the road you are taking.

One of my favorite sayings in the recent time that keeps me sane is:

"The only right way is my way."

How do you feel about the new year ahead?

Totally agree with you. Most important is to understand previous experiences and learn from them and then just go without goal forward and do what seems right at that time. :)

I'm also struggling: do you need a goal in life, or don't you need goals, because life is a succession of events you cannot plan? Everything flows, the ancient Greeks said. Therefore I like your suggestion, to reflect the past and adjust the path for the future as you think it is right - on the way, with a good gut feeling! And Mark Twain said it with ultimate vigor - not knowing a goal: Two Most Important Days in Your Life: The Day You Were Born and the Day You Discover Why. Never stop discovering ??
