The Single Most Important Lesson I’ve Learned Working In IT Architecture

People, Process or Technology

Not all lessons are created equal.

Some lessons we learn are small. They are little reminders along the way of what truly matters.

Other lessons are giant. They fundamentally change the course of our entire lives.

Over the past 10 years working in Enterprise Architecture, this is probably the single most important lesson I've learned:

Let People always win over Process or Technology

And here's why:

We are the sum of people we meet and connect with.

Communication is the keystone skill in IT Architecture, as in many other endeavors.

Without a connection to the people you work with, you can't possibly communicate effectively.

So, yes, keep up on your technologies and have fun nerding out with your colleagues. And yes, dive deeply into the best practices, and processes of your discipline as well as your domain's value streams and processes.

BUT - do none of this at the expense of your relationship with the people around you. Whether colleagues, customers, or clients, they are the ones you will remember, the ones who will give you the most, and the ones upon whom you should always spend your precious time. You will not regret it.
