The global demand for animal-derived protein is estimated to reach 1250 tonnes by 2050. The food industry will thus be burdened with meeting this exponential demand growth while upholding the sustainability commitment. This conundrum is shifting the focus to more refined choices like cellular agriculture, single-cell protein, air-derived proteins, and molecular farming. Out of these, single-cell proteins (SCP) have shown great potential to solve the global nutrition problem while meeting changing consumer perceptions and regulatory compliance measures.?

On the commercial front, several startups and multinationals are working to set up SCP industries and upscale their production for mass-consumption. The hotspots in this space include the US, Europe, Singapore, and Israel. Despite the momentum, there are some roadblocks to its full-scale commercialization, mostly rooted in the production capacity and stability of ingredients used in the process.?
Currently, almost all aspects of cellular-level protein production processes are marred by technological challenges. A close life cycle assessment and techno-commercial analysis of these processes sheds light on some plausible solutions. However, their practical application will be decided by consumer acceptance and their ability to resolve the open regulatory questions.?
