The 2nd highest-paid person on the set is the DP or director of photography. His job is complicated, but at its core, it’s making the scene look like it is supposed to and 70% of that is lighting.
My undergrad degree is in theatrical lighting and right out of college I was Whitney Houston’s lighting designer. I designed for other know artist of the day between Baltimore and NYC. I also designed lights for the Baltimore Ballet, dinner theatre, and even Reagan’s presidential inauguration.
I moved to LA to be a lighting designer and fell into doing high-end commercials.
Though I was a prop master and art director my knowledge of lighting and camera lens really paid off which allowed me to stay at the top for 15 years till I relocated back to the east coast.
Lighting lights things - seems obvious, doesn’t it?
But here’s the secret to great lighting. Ready?? You light for the shadows.
That’s right flat lighting is boring and shows no depth but when you light for the shadows you control the look of your nose, eye sockets, and under your chin.
Get these right and you will look fabulous on camera!!
Understanding just this one tip can set you apart for your colleagues.
In the ebook, I talk about the 3 types of lights that you can use in your videos.
