The New York Times ran a piece on Bolivian wines and spirits today, with some nice shoutouts to Academy Award Winning director Steven Soderbergh. He partnered with the Granier family of Casa Real, celebrating 100 years of family production of the national spirit of Bolivia-Singani, and launched Singani 63 brand in the U.S.
Singani, and Bolivia for that matter, were relative unknowns in the U.S. Soderbergh's backing an unknown product with a 500 year heritage of sustainably produced spirits might seem to be a big leap. But behind the scenes Soderbergh worked on a campaign to get the T TTB to recognize Singani as the signature spirit of Bolivia with a distinct identity differentiating it from Brandy. That reached fruition in Nov. 2023 with TTB granting Singani as a unique category.
The whole Singani story is a wonderful one of history, heritage, legacy and the unique challenges of growing grapes at over a mile in altitude in the High Andes mountains.
Check out the website at www.Singani63.com, and the Casa Real story at https://www.singanicasareal.com/ for some history lessons on how the oldest clear spirit in the Americas (yes, even older than Pisco) became a personal quest for Soderbergh.
