Sin City
(Welcome to Las Vegas ??!)
?
Las Vegas, also known as ‘Sin city’, is one of the most visited cities in the USA. It is also host to some of the biggest and most luxurious hotels in the world. Definitively well worth a trip!
?
History[1],[2],[3],[4]
Las Vegas is Spanish for “the meadows”. The area was named by Rafael Rivera, the first European American of record to view and cross Las Vegas Valley, as it featured abundant wild grasses, as well as the desert spring waters needed by westward travelers. Rivera scouted for Antonio Armijo’s trading party from New Mexico. In January 1830, he blazed a route to the Mojave River in California by way of the Armargosa River. Rivera’s route became a vital link in the Old Spanish Trail, making Las Vegas Springs an essential stop on the way to Southern California because it shortened the trip to Los Angeles.
Las Vegas was settled in 1905, when 110 acres of land adjacent to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks were auctioned in what would become the downtown area. In 1911, it was incorporated as a city.

Sin City[5],[6]
In 1930, the Hoover Dam was built on the border between Nevada and Arizona, attracting many male workers to Las Vegas. This is when hotel casinos, such as the Fremont Hotel and the Northern Club, opened their doors complete with addictive slot machines, bars, and showgirl theaters but also gangsters, bringing criminal activity with them. Soon, prostitution and other shady businesses started to rise in the area. Because of the male-focused entertainment and soaring crime rates, Las Vegas earned its nickname, Sin City, in the 1930s. ?
The Las Vegas experience can be summed up by the infamous phrase “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas”, which is now used in a variety of situations demanding secrecy.
